His wife didn't want to be around Ted so Ted thought he could give her all the space she needed by going to England, he didn't leave because he gave up fighting for them but even that wasn't enough to solve everything. It's easy to say that you wouldn't leave but if your partner is telling you they don't want to be around you then are you going to stay despite what they told you and potentially make things worse because it's just a lose lose situation no matter what you do.

Their team just got promoted and the season before that Rebecca sabotaged Ted at points which caused the team to not be at their best. Rebecca can't fire Ted just because he says he's a bad coach.
