That’s why whenever Natsu or those wolves tried to get close to him and he said to stay back the curse activated and destroyed everything around him because he showed concern for life So when Zeref talks about different Eras he’s actually referring to periods of his life where he goes from caring about life to not caring about life When he cares about life he hides away so that his curse doesn’t kill anyone and when he doesn’t care about life the curse stops, thus restoring his power and leading him to do fucked up shit, which is why he was pissed. He knew that because of Grimoire Heart Acnalogia was going to show up, and seeing Grimoire Hearts actions combined with Acnalogia treating Fairy Tail like insects, would make him stop caring about life. Thus lead him to doing fucked up shit again

If no one had fireworks or New Years parties, it would still be a New Year regardless right?? So the only difference was, Zeref remained weak and neutrual in the old era. In this new era, Fairy Tail is wiped out and Zeref disregards his value for life and once again becomes all powerful again. Once we get to the next arc you'll (or at least should) see the difference in how the show feels and why it's a new era. Things are gonna change in FT from this point forward.
