The fact that Pat said she was one of the few background characters he recognized means that her character had potential for something. Gildarts just got introduced so him having a child had to be introduced soon or it would have been more of a convenient plot point.

Aokiji hinted at knowing Luffy's grandfather but by that time you wouldn't remember that scene of Garp training Koby and Helmeppo and being interested in their talk about Luffy. Like with Naruto they made it obvious that Minato was Naruto's dad with the constant comparisons so the buildup was prominent up until the reveal even if they made it obvious.

She hasn't been a prominent character but like Elfman and Mirajane during Phantom Lord and The battle of fairy tail arc. She's getting her own story on Tenrou island. There isn't an "official MC". Hiro Mashima said if he had to choose it would be Natsu. But how he built the story since the beginning the guild and the members have been the MC. We get development from the guild not Natsu or Lucy (for now)

About Cana not telling gildarts immediately. You have to understand that he’s gone for years at a time and your lying if you say it’s not hard to tell someone a big bomb like that. It makes sense why she wasnt able too and the fear of not being acknowledged by him makes sense. Cana’s whole arc is about realizing what’s really important to her and that’s her guild. By the end she was able to accept not achieving her main goals and that’s great. It also is nice that she didn’t beat bluenote with it cause she’s inexperienced. However she was able to wield it

The reason it feels out of nowhere is because of how quickly the plot point escalated. Just this episode we found out she did all this to meet her dad and right after the reveal happened. If they left a gap between us knowing her reason for wanting to pass the trial and the reveal of her dad being Gildarts then it would've felt more organic.

2023-12-12 15:49:54 +0000 UTCActually I'm not sure if before this they allude to Cana's secret being about Gildarts, however at the beginning of this arc they do subtly allude to it (when Gildarts comes back to announce the s-class exams). That's why for me it works since when Gildarts 1st appears Cana (I believe) isn't present. Yeah overall, I think I do like this storyline with Cana even though it has its frustrating moments at the beginning, and of course we get to see a lot more Gildarts because of it.

She probably didn’t act a certain way around Gildarts when he was first introduced was because ever since she was little he paid no attention to her. After a while you grow tired of that so she needed another way to get noticed.
