Old heads like Yoda, Whiteboard and Yamamoto are easily top 5 in their verse and only lose to the strongest villains in the series. Meanwhile Makarov just gets shit on in every encounter he's in despite being the guild leader of the supposed strongest guild and a wizard saint.

Gray's still my favorite tho lol

Most people just tend to think that’s his role since most other rival characters are. He’s Natsu’s rival, but he’s not the second lead. In fact, Gray was never supposed to be a main in the first place. He was initially going to have the same time of supporting role that Cana, Elfman, and Mira do (hence why they were all introduced together). That said, some certain arcs do up him to being a deuteragonist. And when they do, it’s great.
