2023-10-10 23:03:10 +0000 UTCSo the thing with Gildarts is the anime was actually set to end at episode 72 (yeah...I know). So they took out a lot of references to Gildarts. The manga actually mentions him all the time when people were talking about who the strongest is. He was first mentioned in the same scene when they were talking about Laxus and Mystogan. He was also mentioned at the start of the Laxus arc by Happy and when Mystogan fights Laxus, even he says Gildarts is the strongest. To which Laxus’ response is “He’s never coming back.” And was also alluded to when Makarov was trying to think of a successor. It showed his back and Makarov said “He is not possible.” (Obviously because he was on the quest.) So yeah, it’s actually not as out of nowhere as you’d think.

2023-10-10 22:31:25 +0000 UTCNo, he’s absolutely right on that. What’s happening is Fairy Tail, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, etc. all take inspiration from Dragon Ball. Mashima constantly sites his inspirations very clearly. Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest Ultimate Muscle, and Gag manga (that’s where the goofy stuff comes from). One Piece is never once mentioned. Also in the manga versions Gildarts and Shanks don’t even look alike at all. And for every other comparison that gets made, it is complete nonsense in anime and manga alike.
