When they both merged back together again he regained his full magical powers back. Thats how he gained the upper hand in the arc until Natsu ate the ethernano to power up and beat him. You can call it an illusion sort of but its more unique than that cause Siegrain can still interact and operate with the world like a normal person.

Even Ur who was straight up said to still be alive as the ice to the point where Ultear’s magic wouldn’t work on it. And then the ice melts which Makarov confirmed is the same as killing her. Yet somehow she doesn’t count as a death either...

I will give them major props for always sprinkling in little hints at stuff throughout the story. You actually have to pay decent attention to even notice some things. One of my favorite small things they bring up and you don’t see for quite awhile are the “unison raids”. When you see a particular duo do it in the future it’s sooo much cooler too. I do however get what you are saying about that particular plot point and character development opportunity that they missed. I can 100% see how it would bother you. It’s been awhile since I have rewatched it I’m currently about to get there so now rewatching years later I might actually agree with you.

Since it ruined a perfect chance for a certain character’s development (that the arc literally set up at the start). Other arcs tend to deliver on their promises way more and a lot of that one...just doesn’t. For example, this one introduced the concept of a guild alliance and you actually get to see all of the guilds come together and work as team to get the job done. By the end all of them played a role in some fashion. Or in the Tower of Heaven delivering on its promise of showing Erza’s backstory and her inner psyche as well as relationships with Jellal, Gray, and Natsu. And even delivering on the setup of even earlier episodes talking about Natsu’s inner potential.
