Dong-mae’s words were probably what made Ae-shin reflect on herself. Perhaps those words were what led her to live as a fighter for Joseon’s independence.
For Dong-mae, the day Ae-shin saved him was the saddest yet most heart-fluttering day of his life. But for Ae-shin, that day must have been an incredibly humiliating experience.
Ae-shin had always thought of herself as different from other noblewomen, but it seems that Dong-mae’s words challenged that belief.
(Since you’ve already watched up to episode 9, I’ll explain further.)
Later, when Eugene tells Ae-shin that he was born a slave, she looks visibly shocked, her expression hardening. She then says, “I naturally assumed Eugene was a noble like me.”
At that moment, Dong-mae’s words must have come back to her: “You are nothing more than a pampered noblewoman.”
She realizes that believing herself to be somewhat different from others was actually her own arrogance.

Dong-mae tells Ae-shin why he returned to Joseon from Japan. He says that it was because of that one memory of her saving him.
Doesn’t that statement alone already sound like he came back because he likes her?
Dong-mae also says, “No matter how many times I think about it, this is the only path for me.” This is a metaphor. “This path” represents his feelings for Ae-shin.
It seems that Ae-shin clearly understood what he meant as well.
This drama contains many metaphors and figurative expressions in its dialogue. Rather than interpreting the words literally, it’s important to consider the context and surrounding events. However, foreigners might find this aspect difficult to fully grasp.
