It's only through the continued existence of the shoulder straps that the experience of removing the straps can be appreciated and reveled in. As a butt is nothing without matching hips and thighs, the torso is nothing without an accompanying collarbone and armpits. The straps have the ability to break up the smooth, milky plains of the chest and leave the viewer wishing that they could see more, even though most of the skin is already exposed.
Their classification as clothing also opens up the opportunity to be used as a temptation, allowing both the subject and the viewer to imagine hooking a finger under the strap and pulling it off. The impact of such an action lies more in the experience of exposing rather than the actual result of exposure. It allows for the visceral experience of revealing something that was originally meant to be hidden. Similar actions include: unwrapping a present, pulling a knot loose, and even pulling down panties. Vastly different degrees of intensity, yet the lewdness of the action remains the same.
The shoulder straps are an integral part to many designs in media and have earned their place in not only accentuating the chest, but also in presenting the possibilities for more lewd actions. They exist as a barrier, a divider, and a shield, protecting the wearer from feeling as if they were naked by covering the armpits and creating a distinct separation between the arms and the chest. And yet, their persistent cover only acts as a indication of the treasure to be unearthed and as a vehicle to a more pleasurable viewing experience.
