Additionally, since funerals often involved people who had traveled from afar, they would typically stay overnight, sharing food and drinks prepared by the family as they reminisced about the deceased. In the early scenes of the drama, when Deok-sun’s grandmother passed away, you can see friends and family who hadn’t seen each other in a long time gathering and creating a lively atmosphere at the funeral. This can be understood in the same context. Deok-sun’s father even took the opportunity to introduce his children to distant relatives, family, and friends whom he hadn’t seen in a long time. However, not all Korean funerals follow this form. When the deceased has suffered a tragic accident, a child has passed away, or there has been an unexpected, painful loss, funerals are usually marked by profound grief and held in a solemn and respectful manner. In these cases, playing cards is absolutely avoided. Recently, funeral customs have shifted, and unless visitors are close friends, it’s now uncommon for them to stay overnight. Playing cards has also become very rare at Korean funerals. ☺
