After witnessing south korea's president declaring martial law and koreans protesting for president impeachment, bora scene hits different

rose

I think Bora went with the cops because she could't stand to watch her mom give up her pride her sake any longer, hearing all those things her mom said and seeing her bleeding foot made her feel guilty so she wanted to stop her before she'll give up even more of her pride in front of the cops.

There is a Korean movie called 1987 in which Kim Tae-ri stars. It is set during the time when President Chun Doo-hwan ruled with an authoritarian regime. During this period, many students like “Bora” were protesting to overthrow the dictatorship and to fight for democracy. They were often arrested by the police, tortured, and some even lost their lives. The drama Reply 1988 is set in this era of dictatorship. A year before the setting of the drama, a Seoul National University student was tortured and killed by the police while protesting, which sparked a huge public outcry. “Bora,” who protests for democracy, is doing something righteous, but her parents, fearful that their daughter might be arrested and tortured, plead with her to stop protesting. The reason South Korea can enjoy freedom and live as a democratic society today is because of these historical struggles.

I watched this back when it was airing (I'm a fan of the orig Reply 1997). Haven't rewatched since then so I'm excited to dive into this again. I can't remember everything that happened but I remember loving the families and the two female leads (sisters).

krizhe ming

I would love for you two to start a Podcast actually i will be the first to tune in 😂

I relate! lol to the jaw pain... I thought it was my ear but basically I get TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) due to grinding teeth and mild sleep apnea.. I was recommended a mouth guard on that maybe it can help you too. By the way I am really enjoying your reactions, thanks so much!

As a Bora stan, I would like to say she was fighting for Democracy!! She might be a bit violent but she stands up for what is right. She has a spine.

claireisuche

Lee Mi-yeon is the actor who sometimes appeared as Deok-sun's future role in this drama And I think Bora's character is a bit violent, but she knows justice and is not afraid to act. Oh, another thing I want to say is that the actor is not Hwang In-yeop, but he looks like him.

Family by choice is sooop good

Nadia

Tiana lowkey right tho, Deoksun is kinda troublesome lol.

If you want to know more about this background, I recommend the movie 1987. Kim Tae-ri also appears as a main character in 1987. At that time, the military dictatorship government imprisoned and tortured many college students who were participating in the democracy movement. Some students even died from torture, so it was a great act, but Bora's father couldn't help but worry as a family member.

I feel like Bora is under a lot of pressure as the eldest, just like Sunwoo. She even gave up her dream major to help her family’s finances. 😓 I think her sudden cooperation with the police was partly to protect her mom, especially since it was rare for police not to cooperate with the military’s violence at that time. 😟

Korean citizens protested fiercely to break free from the military rule that reigned over the country and establish a Democratic government

Yuli

That's right. Without the students' efforts, the Korean government could not have developed. As a Korean, I feel grateful for their actions. This is important parts of Korean history. But parents are worried because they know so well what happens if their children are caught by the police. After all, both sides understand.

Family by Choice is sooo goood!!! I hope one day you guys can react to it! I know you guys love child actors and the ones in Family by Choice are ssoo cute. The little girl from Love Next Door is in it :)

hally0

In 1988, because it was a military regime in that era, people who opposed it, especially college students, protested a lot. But the government didn't like these people, so they would oppress them, they would randomly attack them, and they would catch students.
