If it's organized really well, with rules and mods and stuff a discord server can be fun! But it's also really time consuming to maintain, so that gotta thought out well.

This is my issue as well. I used to follow 2 people on Patreon who were very active and pushing of their Discord servers. Long story short, it created toxic clique environments that alienated the other patrons, and I unfollowed them both. A lot of people must have thought the same way because their patrons tanked - one of them lost so many I think he just shut down. His Discord server turned his fans so rabid and protective, god forbid you say anything critical or suggest something new in the comments. I joined his Discord for like five days and it was just... unwelcoming and cultish and weird. I don’t know if that would happen here because you’ve fostered an accepting environment. If you started one I’d still join it and give it a go, but it’s good to be cautious. Someone else made a comment about mixing business and pleasure, and I would argue not mixing them would be impossible. That’s the point of the Discord server - while all of us are coming to this page technically for business, to receive a product we pay for, a Discord server would only serve for pleasure.

I’ve been on a couple of servers before and while I personally never had a negative experience, I did notice some negativity and toxic behaviours from others. I’d definitely say proceed with caution. It is a nice idea for the community to have a place to share their stuff and talk to other people, but, as others have mentioned, it can go from friendly to toxic real fast. There’s definitely pros and cons to consider.

Not sure if my post went through or not.But personally my sentiments go with the other s of please be careful .because discord more often then not sadly turns a fun community into a toxic wasteland where only the mods and the mods friends are having a good time.and older member voice s were ignored on issues and new members were treated poorly or ect.but with the right amount of work and people it can be an enjoyable place for all and I myself have meet manny lovely people on there.but for me personally I vote no because I rather you not have to go through the headache of the drama that sometimes comes with a sever.but if you do decide to have one I will support in your efforts but personally may not join.

Maybe modding for servers has ruined me but if it’s any consolation I think it can be done. I’ve made great friends in some of those servers and I have some faith left in me but don’t ask me how to keep it civil between everyone I honestly don’t know. 😩

This is upsetting to learn. I honestly just wanted a place for fans to talk, share art and discuss characters. Why can't everyone be nicer...

If you do decide on setting one up please please PLEASE be very careful. Idk why discord seems to be the place shit goes south but it can be a very toxic environment for some reason. I literally only use it to stay in touch with friends anymore cause too much goes down in VA community discords. Whether or not the VA is actually present, just lurking or actively participating doesn’t seem to matter either.

Well I understand that I’ll be keeping things professional, that’s naturally how I am anyway. As for the other stuff...I like to think I’m a good person and I don’t stand for hate or sexual harassment at all

The issue is usually with Mods and not keeping a clear separation between business and pleasure. With one particular VA there was an issue with racism in their server where not only members of the server were being racist but mods were as well, because the mods were the VA’s personal friends, he knew about the issue for 2 months but did nothing to remove the racist members or the mods. The issue with VAs not keeping a clear line between business and pleasure was kind of involved in that situation too but another example would be VAs having sexual involvement with fans that are wayyyy younger than them or are minors. Some VAs know that some of their fans are sexually attracted to them and would do anything for them so they take advantage of that. I would say it’s important when cultivating a community to be involved and friendly but to an extent. Be very careful about who share your irl personal info with bc there are people who will take advantage of that and spread your details around. Just be very careful in general.

it can be so rewarding to bring people together, but it is a lot of work to manage. just make sure that you are interested in being a community builder, as well as a content creator. also please set up some kind of age verification if it will be 18+
