EARLY ACCESS -- Build 0.14 (Chapter 15)

Update (Feb. 19, 2024):  Now updated to Build 0.14b for all versions (PC, Mac and Android). See change notes at bottom of post for what's different in (b). Also, I've added the ability to download via GoogleDrive.

HERE IT IS!

With a huge thank you to a talented group of volunteers who helped QA this release, Build 0.14 is now available to download! First up, the links, then some stuff for you to read while it downloads.

Version 0.14b (updated for PC and Mac on Feb. 18, 2024)*:

Notes:

Here are some of the highlights for this update:

The new consent sequence should make it much more transparent and reduce confusion as to whether players have opted in or out of explicit content with shifters.

As for the numbers, this is definitely the biggest update I've ever done. That's not an excuse for the amount of time it took to get it to you, but it is huge. We're looking at almost 2,600 lines of script and code, and more than 700 images! All of that said, there was still more I wanted to do with this update, but at a certain point I have to let go. (Maybe I'll do a mini-update in a week or two.)

Alright, that's it for now. I hope you enjoy! Feel free to drop any comments you like below, send them to me via DM, or come by our dysFUNctional Discord channel and say 'hi' to the inmates.

ChangeNotes for Version 0.14b from 0.14a

Cheers!

Consistency is indeed key. But if a dev uses the chapter=version numbering and creates a different sub-versioning, that could also be consistent. (Look at how Chrome, Firefox or even Windows have been juggling with version numbers: even the big players have trouble finding a decent numbering system.)

Diederik van Egmond

Oh, I have to disagree about the letters! They ARE very important, so we know we are playing the latest (hopefully) bug-free version! Knowing that v.304r tweaks possible problems in v.304q is something we players do want and need to know! No need to reply to this! I just want to, again, THANK YOU for having a clear and consistent order to your system of labeling versions of BBN. **

Tom Swift Sr.

That's basically right, yes. Everytime I release new content (not necessarily what I'm calling a chapter but just a new, big chunk of content), the numerical value will go up. Right now, chapter 16 will have at least two parts, so it will likely include builds 15 and 16. Eventually (probably), the build number will be higher than the chapter number, assuming I keep on a path of larger chapters and each chapter is released in multiple parts. The letters should (hopefully) mean little for y'all as they are more a way for me to track very minor tweaks or technical fixes.

So 14 is 15 and 16 will be 15 and 17 will be 16? Or maybe I got that wrong. On, well, at least there *IS* an order to it all! As I said, I supported a number of creators and their games and all of you have different ways of numbering (or otherwise) your game versions. The problem for me is keeping track of all this. (And some change their own naming systems from time to time, which gets *really* confusing. (In one case, one creator made such radical changes to how his game *worked* that the 2.0 versions were NO longer *compatible* with the 1.0 versions -- and you had to start the game from the beginning!) I do give you credit for being consistent in your versions' systems. At least it is possible to keep the order in order when installing the game versions into the previous ones. And I only play a game or a two at a time, which means multiple versions of games start piling up and I have to download games which I might not be playing right away -- and I keep copies of all these compressed versions in their own folder with in a folder for each game. So I end up with a LOT of backlog. (You do NOT want to know how many games I own on Steam that I have yet to even start! Decades worth!) I have been playing BBN, but everything got messed up between a damaged OS and then getting a new computer, so now there is a LOT of catch-up for me with a lot of different games. Then there is that thing that keeps annoying inserting itself into my game playing: LIFE. *argh* **

Tom Swift Sr.

Hey there, you're definitely not the only one. Someone asked about this on Discord yesterday, too. Here's what it says in the changelog file, which should help: "Builds are numbered as follows: A new number indicates new story-content has been added to the game. Updates to the lettering after the build number indicate a technical fix or correction. For example, Build 0.8a and 0.8b have the exact same story content, but 0.8b fixed an audio-related bug. Build 0.9a includes new story-content and resets the lettering sequence." So, Chapter 16 is going to be released in (at least) two parts. First one will be build 0.15, second will be build 0.16. If there is a third part to chapter 16, it'll be build 0.17. It's a holdover of earlier in development when I was doing very short chapters and was including multiple chapters in a single update. But, if I were to do that again and, say, release an update that had Chapters 16 and 17, would I skip a build 0.16 and go straight to build 0.17? Folks will start asking me "where's build 0.16, did I miss an update?" I'm surprised people look at the build or version numbers that closely, to be honest, but you are definitely not the only one. Sorry it's confusing.

Bound By Night

Maybe it is just me, but, gees, I find the way you number your versions is *CONFUSING*. Why is Chapter 15 v.0.14b?! Why just not have it as *v.0.15*?! I mean, that *is* what it *is*. I fell behind in getting updates for about the 8+ games I support of itch.io and Patreon because my computer C: drive was damaged and I decided just to have built and buy a new top-of-the-line gaming computer; the whole thing took about two months before I actually got the computer, and I've spent over a month now trying to get it set up the way I want it. (I do a LOT of custom folders for my computer and when I switched from Windows 10 to 11, I found the basic folder design *very* different. So I've also been redoing about 200+ custom icons -- including ones for all my Itch/Patreon games. *argh* The thing is, with some game creators, the way they name their various versions gets damn confusing as to what goes first -- well, that's if the whole games isn't in the download and you have to install it into your previous game folder -- BUT with some others, the whole game is download and you just play the newest version. There is one game creator who is doing like 4-5 different games all at the same time and he will do downloads with various of his games together or do them by month or by color! He was kind enough at one point, when I became a patron of his to make a list of all the games and their versions and files, but, gees, keep up with him since that list has just been very confusion. Ah, sorry! The last 7 days have been rough for me and this is just a general bitch. I've been spending the entire day today trying to get all these games up-to-date in their latest version so I can start playing them again, and, well, I think I've download BBN v.14b three different times now, because I believe I still do NOT have Chapter 15. *sigh* **

Tom Swift Sr.

well, I've been playing all the routes available, up until before this update. I do have my favorites, and whether it was one way or another, I did like the content. I do wish that the first time with Mayhew would have been alone. The end to the chapter did surprise me, and honestly I was hoping that would not happen. I guess I will see what comes, but It is exciting regardless. I definitely want more Ronan time and more Mayhew time 😅

Fernando Ruiz

I don't think so, no. I might be able to hire a Daz artist to help work on some scenes but haven't really thought about it. Unfortunately, I think it's easier to get help on straight stuff than gay. All the folks interested in doing gay 3d art are doing it with their own projects.

Bound By Night

Question: Would a large donation help the process of this game at all?

Toni K

I'm sorry it made you sad! I knew that could happen for that character's fans. I know this cliffhanger leaves a lot of questions and, if what Nick said is true, could be felt as a very unsatisfying arc. I will try to have the next update out to folks as quickly as possible. ❀

Bound By Night

This cliffhanger saddened me, I was hoping for a possible route if not scene with said character. Unless this is meant to throw us off, but honestly that would be interesting to see how that would work considering he's barely there :(

Keiverse87

Omg you're spoiling us!!! Team Mayhew 😍

Toni K

I can't post pictures into comments, but I did just open up some of the first few images and I see what you're talking about (at least in one image, where the camera is below Seth and looking up at him, with some ceiling lights behind him). During QC, I am so focused on their clothes and clipping, I completely missed his hair. The hair seems normal in the other images, but I am redoing some stuff other stuff right now, so I'll put these in the queue and see if I can get them fixed. Ronan's head is a tougher issue. It did somehow get scrunched in the lab scene, but I can't figure out what happened. When I reset the pose on his face to 0, it goes back to normal, but when I look at all the active pose settings before a reset and manually put them back to 0, it doesn't change the "scrunch." It seems to be back to normal by the time you get to the locker room, but something did happen in the lab. That's not an easy fix, unfortunately, since I don't know what went wrong. I could manually reset and then repose his face for every image, but that'll take a while. Not ruling it out, but not sure it's worth it.

Bound By Night

In the first two or three images where Seth's head is visible, his hair is very thin on top, like he suddenly aged 30 or 40 years ;). When I mentioned a few images of Ronan's face being contorted, maybe that was a tad exaggerated. But there's definitely something off with hit eyes and his cheek bones. It looks like his face was stretched a bit too wide. Regarding resolution, there is one image (with Ronan and Mayhew standing next to each other) where the resolution is good at first, and then changes with the next line of dialogue (where Ronan says "Wait outside, both of you"). Other than that, the lower resolution is pretty much consistent. But I've only played until just after the shower scene, so I can't comment on the rest of the game. I made some screenshots, but can't seem to send them via patreon...

Petersen

Hmm that's the first I've heard about Seth's hair or a resolution concern. I'll take a look. Seth does have different hair than when he was first introduced, but it shouldn't appear as "thin". You're the first person to mention anything about Ronan, but I was wondering about it while doing renders. I spent some time poking at it and comparing files and could not see where anything had been corrupted or warped, but now that you're saying it, it's validating to know I wasn't alone. I'll spend some more time looking at it. The actual resolution of the images is all the same 1920x1080, and the process of making them is the same, but I did have to use a different program to convert everything to webp format to keep the file sizes under control. We caught a few of them in QA that had pixelated during the conversion. Are you saying it's a consistent issue, or you're encountering some?

Bound By Night

I've been playing through the whole game again, and just started chapter 15 today. I noticed at the beginning of the chapter a few images with Seth having very thin hair, and Ronan having a slightly contorted face. Also the resolution of all the images (up to the shower scene so far) is noticably lower than the rest of the game. Is that a known issue? Please excuse me now, as I need a little cool down after a steamy shower scene ;)

Petersen

OMG! That was awesome - #TeamConnor

Norman Gugliotta

Hah, okay, I did wonder if my shower with Seth was the reason. But then I thought the relationship was open. And Seth, Connor and Alex had a threesome, so Connor would be okay with Seth anyway. Oh my... I am planning on pursuing Ronan. How will Connor react then? :O Please don't make me choose... T_T Team Werewolf!

Barbara Smell

Hopefully the coding worked on the smell issue. Spoiler incoming . . . . . . He's supposed to have that reaction if you said you were interested in a monogamous relationship but hooked up with Seth. (Yes, he said he wanted it open, but... He notices.)

Bound By Night

Yay! Alex going to Paris with his "boyfriend". What did Connor smell on Alex when he hugged him in Mayhew's office ? It caused Connor to turn from warm to cold. +++ New information on Connors background +++ Alex could point out that Seth saved him +++ Being inspected by Ronan OMG!!! I do wonder if "flirting" with Ronan actually hurts their relationship? He doesn't seem to appreciate this kind of flirting yet I'd like to let him know that I am interested in him. I can tell it's going to be a long way with Ronan, but that's okay. For me it's a slow burn. And I can enjoy a good slow burn. This was supposed to be my first time with a werewolf... but just like in the dungeon with Ronan... this wasn't the right setting nor the right circumstances. I don't want Mayhew to watch. I don't want to make love to my boyfriend in my boss' office while my boss is watching. You may call my Alex old-fashioned in this way. :P He did enjoy the shower with Seth though. Team Werewolf! Team SethWithBenefits!

Barbara Smell

I am *very* glad to see Seth has his fans. He and Nick were two characters whose introduction I think I bungled a bit, so I'm glad to see he's got some love, too. And, I hope you like this update and the content with him. Definitely a chance to have some fun! 😁

Bound By Night

finally! can't wait to see more content with Seth, thank you for your work!
