Android Users: Poll on File Naming

Hey there. This is a poll just for Android users as I could use some feedback.

I mentioned this in an earlier post but, as you may recall, there was a recurring issue where, with each update, Android users would have to start from the beginning. It took me a long time to figure out why, and it all came down to one of the configuration settings when I was creating a new Android build.

I thought the setting was just for the name of the file, but Android OS interprets that to be the name of the app. As a consequence, each time I changed the name of the file to reflect the new version, Android OS thought it was a completely different app... and users had to start all the way at the beginning.

Well, with the last build, I stopped updating that, but some of you have particularly keen eyes and see the filename is still "boundbynight.v010a-xxxx..." Even though it is build 0.11, the filename looks like it's build 0.10. For folks who look at the file name, that's generating some confusion.

So, here's the question. Should I keep it "as is" so y'all don't have to start over yet again, or should I change it once more... and never again?

Note:  It is possible to go into Skip mode with a new game and, if you enable the ability to skip "Unseen Text" in the preferences menu, you can fly through most of the game in about 5 minutes, pausing only at menus.

Yeah, that's what I discovered (but only after "v0.10a" got baked into the filename).

Oh, there is a very easy fix for it with the file name... but changing the file name is what will make everyone on Android have to restart once more.

Most Android games just have the updated version number on the main page and keep the file name consistent

Can you just leave off the version number off the file name (boundbynight.exe) but have the Folder containing the file name with the version number (Folder: boundbynight.v010a) I don't use Android, just thinking...

Lars Vidar

I don't use Android at all so it doesn't impact me, but as an end user, I imagine doing it so they don't have to restart every update would be preferrable.

This is like when I started with application development. Documentation is always crap. Anyway, I thought that Ren'Py had better tools to port games to Android, but I see that's not the case πŸ˜….

Honestly, I kind of hate the process of making this for Android. I don't have a computer science or programmer background, and putting the Android builds together is a lot of work. I'm working to streamline it and trying to identify and iron out all the kinks, but holy moly... And the documentation for making the Android builds of a Ren'Py game is shit. Whenever I encounter an issue, I have to turn to other VN developers and hope they have encountered a similar issue and know how to fix it. (That's how I discovered why everyone was having to restart with each build.)

Better to change it one last time and avoid more confusion in the future, I think. I had the same problem with my own app and it was the best decision in my case.
