BtS: Rendering Glitches

Last night I rendered a bunch of images; some for the end of chapter 5, others for the opening of chapter 6. When I checked them this morning, I realized I'm going to have to redo most of them, but I thought it might make for an interesting Behind the Scenes post.

There is a way to preview a shot before you render it, but I don't do it for every shot. Rather, I tend to do it a couple times per scene to see how things look, but then as I'm queueing things up, I might change a camera angle or adjust a lightsource for a better angle for one camera, but not think to preview the results from another angle.

These are some of the results of that. In one image, a light source renders as a giant white disk. This is easily fixed, but is a pain. Another shot here relates to the difficulty of shots at nighttime or in darkness. I have Alex nicely backlit, but you can't make out many of his details or see his face. Yes, it's more realistic, but it doesn't make for a very interesting shot.

The last one is just a straight up glitch from the Chapter 2 renders, where for some reason Nick's eyes rendered as black orbs. It's something where the rendering software doesn't play nicely with a particular process and is fixed by selecting a different but slower method for rendering.

In other news, I had a brainstorm this morning about writing an explicit scene into the end of chapter 6. I think the writing for that is going to be a challenge, but I'm looking forward to it.
