Sneak Peek: Reshooting End of Chapter 1

Lighting. Shadows.

These two factors can have a huge impact in how a scene impacts a viewer or player. This is particularly true for a story with a horror theme. When everything is lit up like Times Square, creatures and people who are written as hiding in the shadows, looming at the edge, just stand out under the klieg lights just like every other character.

When I was doing the first cut of images for Chapter 1, I was really struggling with figuring out how lighting worked in the software I'm using. When I was originally planning the scene, I wanted to have the first real look at the vampire cast as a backlit silhouette with glowing red eyes. I knew it was technically feasible, but I was struggling with how to accomplish that along with everything else. So, I went with what was within my technical ability at the time and pressed ahead, even though the result wasn't exactly what I was aiming for.

Today, progress! Included in this post are some renders I came up with while testing different lighting levels and angels for a re-shoot of Chapter 1. While I'm not 100% settled on these as the final shots, you can expect these or something like them to take their place at the end of Chapter 1.

I'm going to continue working more with lighting and shadows in future scenes. It's a lot of additional work, but I think it is soooo worth it for a story like Bound by Night. Let me know if you agree!
