BtS: A Note on the Mythology

While trying to avoid spoilers, I thought folks might be interested to learn a little about the process I’m putting into in developing the mythology behind the supernatural and horror elements of Bound by Night. Now, I’m not so conceited as to claim I’m inventing “a wholly unique mythology.” There isn’t much that’s truly unique these days. (“Simpsons did it!”)

But I am drawing inspiration from a number of pieces that, blended together, I think are going to make for an engaging story that connects the eroticism in the game to the supernatural elements. I hope the erotic contents of the game get you hot, but I think they’re going to be more meaningful and less contrived if they’re tied into the story, and the mythology is going to be part of that.

The mythology should also provide a cohesive framework that helps to explain the relationships between some of the game’s characters. And, depending on how development goes, it will also provide a way for me to introduce other supernatural creatures (a Minotaur, perhaps).

I couldn’t begin to list all the sources of inspiration that are percolating in the back of my brain, but one of the authors I’m currently reading is TJ Klune and his Green Creek series, starting with the book Wolfsong. If you haven’t checked it out, I highly recommend it. While I’m going to be setting aside the magical elements of Green Creek, I love how he explores the relationship between the wolves and pack. Particularly where two of the wolves have “alpha” personalities. (If you haven’t read Wolfsong, pick it up. It’s available on Kindle for a few bucks.)

Finally, I’m setting aside any truly magical, mystical elements. I love stories like that, but magically summoned earthquakes and fireballs will not be making an appearance in Bound by Night.

For more details on the mythology, you’ll have to play future releases to find out.
