I don't think the records on the Path of Shennong were altered, it is the fact that most Cultivators who choose the Path do so to gain power. Jin is different in that he is a farmer at heart and loves and respects the Earth, Jin is like Shennong who gave the gift of Agriculture to the World so Jin is in a sense closer to Shennong then the others even Xiaoshi. When others see Jin's soul? he has the appearance of Shennong.

But, iirc based on the visions Tianlan showed Jin of learning from Shennong, I've always understood it to be that Tianlan and Jin's relationship to be a deviation from the exact/true teachings of Shennong in some way (although there's also a hint of approval from Shennong in the vision when he appears to see both Tianlan and Jin despite it being a "memory"). Your theory does raise the interesting question of whether the demons some how tampered with Shennong's original message got distorted by demon/outside interference or his original teachings were "wrong" in some sense? Or are Tianlan and Jin a natural evolution of those teachings for the current situation? A combo of all or none of the above?? I like the theory!

So far we have"met" 4 of them besides tianlan- the one on the steppe, the one in shrouded mountain, the beast ish one in the north, and grumpy guy by the sea..Except for the grumpy guy one, we KNOW that the other 3 do not have a host/avatar/partner...I best, MOST if not all of the world spirits (the ones shennong made originally to protect the world)are currently alone, except for tianlan. And the ones in the waste zones are..dead/heavily damaged.

2026-02-23 20:38:57 +0000 UTCIf not completely wrong, then the existing documentation on the Path of Shennong that Shen Yu references is at least incomplete. No surprise there, really, as even a more humble Dao is a thing which intrinsically defies being simplified or constrained in a discrete, absolute definition. A true Dao cannot be described, depicted, documented, or otherwise captured. It must be realized; experienced; lived. Anything pretending otherwise is a fiction, a useful lie at best. For such things must use assumption and generalization to achieve even the residue of depth. In truth, they are no more the Dao itself than a cave painting is alive. Jin would probably admit he's, more than a little, playing things by ear. He doesn't know exactly where this all will go; but he has his beliefs, he has his goals, and he is clear-eyed about working it out. He certainly didn't plan to fix things like this when he set out for the AH. He wouldn't take credit for it either. I suspect he treats the whole project like helping a friend or neighbor with moving furniture. It's nothing to put on airs over, it's just a polite thing to do. He is the most Canadian Xianxia protagonist ever, and it's great.

He is a smart man, but I have a hard time believing he would be willing to turn away from demonic cultivation just because another way to save the world was discovered.
