v5c72: The Scouring of the North

This chapter has been edited to make things more clear. Sorry about the confusion!
=================

=================
The days after the battle at the northern base had been immensely trying for Yulong. His Master’s defeat had sent shockwaves of fear through the rank and file—but he had managed to hold them together, if barely. Worse, Chixia and Huian were both missing. and after the second day of no response he had to assume that they were both dead.

The only saving grace were the contingencies—some planned by Yulong, but most by his Master. He set those all into effect, constantly sending the coded pulses down the transmission stone relays—their enemy was one who could fight his Master and win, who knew they had bases in the north, so he sounded a general dispersal and evacuation. They thankfully had time—for from what he had been able to smell, the unknown man had been on his last legs at the end.

And so the base was a hive of activity. The priority documents and specialists had gone first, speeding east, but they had a lot of bases in the north and a great number of their experiments were too volatile to easily move—and some of them were his Master’s personal projects, watched over only by shackled spirits. Going in and personally retrieving them would take time.

Yulong was in the eye of a controlled storm, issuing orders, reassuring his followers, and making sure everything ran smoothly. Losing the main northern base and his Master’s defeat were both devastating setbacks… but Yulong had faced many setbacks in his life. Getting crushed into the dirt just meant you had to stand back up again—no matter how disgraceful you looked covered in mud. All that mattered was that you were alive—that you could try and struggle again and again and again. He could still feel the thin thread of connection to his Master, so the old man was alive. In time, they would recover their strength.

“My Brothers and Sisters, keep your heads held high! This is not the end! I know the fires in your hearts have yet to burn out!” Yulong encouraged the flagging followers, clapping one of them on the shoulder. He saw the determination return and the man puffed out his chest.

“I won’t fail you, Heavenly Demon!” he shouted.

“Baishou, you’re on the next one out. West through Grey Shard Coast, and then coordinate from there,” Yulong commanded.

“Yes, Heavenly Demon!”

Yulong strode forth and commanded and comforted for three days. He did not sleep once, even when he felt exhausted, and even when he felt an odd tugging, trying to lull him to sleep. He must have been more affected by the fight than he thought.

“Young Master,” an exhausted voice called out. A voice he knew.

“Beidou! Zhigong!” he exclaimed, a wide grin overtaking his face. His two oldest companions were definitely worse for wear. Zhigong was missing an eye, and Beidou’s rib cage was mostly caved in, but they lived. Relief flooded his soul. “How did you manage to survive?”

“Dug our way out of the collapsed tunnels, Young Master, then ran the rest of the way,” Beidou answered, her voice soft and raspy.

He smiled and embraced them both. “You two are on the next transport out, no arguing. Rest and recover. I’ll take care of this and see you soon.”

Things were looking up… which is when the transmission stone array began to buzz. It vibrated angrily. Yulong touched the artifact. The line hissed and buzzed, garbled exclamations coming over the line—before he felt a pulse. For a moment, the transmission stabilized.

“—can anyone hear me?” Yulong’s eyes widened. Things really were looking up!

“Huian! You still live—”

“There's no time! The Cloudy Sword Sect has mobilized! They’re heading north!” Huian’s voice was urgent.

Yulong’s heart seized in his chest at the words, but he forced himself to calm.

“That is indeed worrying news, Huian, but the straits are not so desperate yet. All the arrays were destroyed. We have time, and the evacuation is well underway.”

“You completed the destruction?” Huian asked. Their voice was terse, but Yulong could feel some of the tension starting to drain away from it. The Cloudy Sword Sect mobilizing was indeed a worry, but they would be stuck scouring the vast Sea of Snow, their bases thousands of Li apart and deep underground.

“Yes, it is done according to our Master’s will.”

There was a pause and more static.

“What about the transit base I used? Somebody took out the entire set of reserves.”

“I spoke to those you left to guard it,” Yulong said, walking over to the wall and pressing it. It brought up every active base. “They completed their task and blew the rails—”

Yulong paused.

He stared at the base in question.

Instead of a dull, dark pearl that should have appeared, showcasing a destroyed formation, instead, the dot was yellow.

That colour indicated that the formation was currently active, but the connection had been interrupted.

His eyes slowly widened.

“Yulong?”

The conversation he had had with the transmission stone operator of that base once more came to mind. The brief pause. The dispassionate tone.

“Yulong?” Huian tried again.

Protocol Silence,” was all Yulong said. His words hung in the air.

The transmission stone cut out.

Yulong’s freckles burned with sickly purple light. A crown formed above his brow. His Qi burned, surging down the rails, brute forcing every break in the connection and sprinting to the formation. He activated a talisman his Master had given to him, darkness swirling around Yulong’s body. He felt blood fill his mouth.

He touched the formation, the decompiled formation, and activated the kill command. He could feel the Qi of the one examining the formation. Dispassionate interest was the only thing he could glean from the smell of fresh parchment and ink.

The formation detonated, but Yulong wasn’t foolish enough to think that was the end of it. His hand slammed into the wall, activating the northern network.

“All bases, commence Operation Ashes. Retreat and burn it all to the ground. If you come under attack, release every experiment.”

He paused before speaking his next words

“This is my last order to you.”

There was a pause as the enormity of the situation sunk in.

One of the transmission stone operators looked sick.

“Glory to the Heavenly Demons,” he whispered.

================================

Floating high above the demonic base, its ruined corpse still smoking, twelve swords stayed in position around a skyship. The cultivators standing upon them had eyes of steel, and their backs were ramrod straight.

The twelve swords were joined by two more. On one was a disciple of the Cloudy Sword Sect.

On the other, an old man stood tall.

“I swore an oath that I would see these wretches destroyed, and it would not do to sit out this assault. So, I ask all of you… shall we?” Shen Yu inquired. His smile was all teeth.

The artifacts created by Elder Yukong began to glow.

And like shooting stars the cultivators blasted towards the horizon, each one headed for a different base.

===================================

Throughout the Sea of Snow, transmission stones blared alarms. Cultivators rose to their feet, their expressions grim. Archivists went from preserving information to destroying it. Last orders were given. Suicide seals were prepared.

Operation Ashes was in effect.

The demonic cultivators were grim and determined. Their conviction, fanatical.

And it meant little as the swords began to fall.

================================

It started quietly.

The first of the demonic cultivators had no idea what had even happened. What simply looked like fog seeped into the base. It happened from time to time.

Then, the guards began to droop. Their eyes grew heavy and their shoulders began to slump. Their breathing became shallow, and shallower, and shallower as their muscles locked up, and one by one, they perished.

Elder Shou of the Hidden Forest simply walked through the front gate. The pollen of the Heaven’s Gazing Bluebell did its work like it always did.

==============================

“We’re going to be ready for anything!” the leader of the base roared. “Not one step back! Glory to the Heavenly Demons!”

The defenders, on their emplacements, and supposedly ready for everything, could only look on in confusion as the formation protecting their base suddenly powered down. The transmission stones went silent. The lights turned off.

And then, all the doors opened and the formations reactivated—targeting the defenders.

Yukong of the Subtle Scripture cocked her head to the side as the brief screams cut off.

“Hmm, a bit disappointing. The variety wasn’t bad, but such simple, brute force methods…” she muttered.

==============================

A great Falcon surveyed her quarry from the heavens. She stood upon the sky, her ice blue eyes rendering judgement.

Perish,” she commanded her foes.

Her words were heeded well. Where once there were people, preparing for a battle, only dead, frozen sculptures remained.

Tianzhe Minyan turned and kept flying, leaving a beacon for her ship to clean up and secure anything of value.

=================================

The blades the disciples of the Cloudy Sword Sect stood upon shuddered and then shifted. Their forms became indistinct, hazy, like the disciples were simply standing on the clouds themselves.

Twelve sets of the Raging Cloudy Sword Formation were deployed.

Across all fronts, the butchery began. The swords came from nowhere. Guards died without a word, artificial Demons fell without fanfare, and when one man did get lucky and blew up his own base—the detonation was watched with dispassionate eyes.

It was hard to kill what had never been in the base in the first place.

==============================

Ji Min ran down the halls, tears in her eyes. Her courage failed her, Heavenly Demons forgive her, her courage had failed her. She, one of the Honoured Researchers taken in by the Demonic Master Himself.

The others, their leader included, had all sacrificed themselves to their Master’s experiment when the base had first been breached. Min had been in awe of the massive construct as it had risen, its eyes burning and its Qi so oppressive it had nearly killed Min right then and there.

A beast in the Earth Realm. Such was its might that their enemy had even paused, taking the creature in. A lone woman, who had obliterated everything in her path, hesitated.

The dark haired woman had looked upon the construct, had tasted its might—and then a slow, happy smile had crawled across her face.

Their clash had destroyed the construction chamber. Their battle was making the heavens shake and the earth rumble… And the demonic construct’s roars of fury were slowly turning into howls of pain.

Howls of pain that were getting closer and closer—impact.

Min’s lower body disappeared as the construct was driven back through the stone wall. She lay on her back. Their magnum opus ripped loose a beam of ravening Qi, and the woman cut it in half, her blade making a mockery of the corrosive breath.

The last thing Min saw was the woman. Her clothes were singed, she was cut and bleeding, but her smile was the brightest thing Min had ever seen. The woman split the construct in two, and one of the halves fell atop Min.

Xiao Su Ge was having a very good day.

=============================

The clouds were not the only thing that descended. Those within a northeastern fortress could only pray as something else was brought to bear.

The first drop of rain that hit the fortress created a crater the size of a child.

The second did the same. And then the heavens opened.

The deluge hit the fortress like a manic drummer, making the earth quake to its primal beat.

But this was only the prelude.

Within a deep, dark stormcloud, Lanlong Bailu and Wakokukin Seiyu joined hands.

From the sky, a ravening dark finger descended, a spiral that looked more like the maw of some great beast. The snow, Li deep in places, melted and turned into pitch black water.

The nightmare sea of black began to rise.

A hurricane and a tsunami formed in the middle of the continent.

The gates were breached. The protections were worthless.

The Storm Wings of Soaring Heaven’s Isle Sect wiped another landmark off the map.

====================================

Deep beneath the earth, a squad of cultivators sprinted. They were silent, their eyes focused and their expressions grim.

“Left Here! Prepare the Demon Spike!” the leader, Huang Mo, barked as they came to a bend in the tunnel and walked into an enormous cavern. It had been slowly, painstakingly dug over generations, each one of the miners shaving the barest bits of dirt from the ceiling, to get them closer and closer to their prize—the massive well of Demonic Qi in Iceheart Forest.

One day it would have been taken so that the worthy could use it. But now, with the artifact in their possession, they would instead destabilize the Qi—break it out of its prison to overwhelm the Spirit Beast and send it on a rampage south. A distraction that would bring to ruination an entire province.

The cultivators went about setting up their formation. They worked feverishly, knowing time was of the essence. Well practised, the formation was deployed quickly. The leader raised his hand to give the order… and all of a sudden he found he couldn’t move.

“Oh? Did you believe I would not notice?” a calm, pleasant voice asked as something began to press down on all of them. The intent was nothing like Mo had ever felt before. Heavier than the heaviest mountain. Colder than the deepest cold.

Mo directed his eyes up, where a tiny spike of ice poked through the ceiling. It was glowing now, as ice crystals began to drift off it.

‘Did you think I would not notice your designs? Your intent to desecrate the graves of the honoured martyrs?

The voice was growing in wrath and hate with each word. It could have killed them in an instant, that much the leader knew.

But to their growing horror, Mo realised the voice wanted them alive.

A titanic head formed from the ice crystals. Its eyes burned with fury. Its head was crowned with an aurora.

‘You dare tunnel under here. You dare invade my home. You dare use me as a shield?! Little worms, little worms, you are far beyond courting death.’

The Spirit Beast’s power reached down and ripped.

Their bodies iced over and shattered as a wall of frost filled in the cavern, destroying everything in its path.

But death did not find them. Instead, they were frozen to the world and pulled up through the earth until they beheld the beast. Its body, pierced with thorns and the roots of a tree. A cadaver, with burning eyes, crowned by a gem of purest black

The Giant Spirit beast leaned in, moving a withered neck, and its lips formed into a smile.

“You want what I guard so badly? You desire the essence of the Enemy? Very well, little worms. I shall give it to you.’

Panic rose in Mo’s soul.

The little shards of ice were pressed up against, then into the frozen mass above.

The demons within were frozen, but some parts of the gem were far from inert. In the deepest recesses, a vile liquid swirled, the crystallization of hate.

Ten human souls were unceremoniously dumped in.

The churning liquid paused, the feral intellect within focusing on the new additions.

If the human souls had mouths they would have started screaming.

======================================

He Who Sweeps the Forest Floor Of Snow and Opens the Way let out a snort of disdain, then turned his eyes to a small sword and a little floating amulet, shuddering and pointing the way.

He would have to thank Shen Yu later for the gift.

Ever since the little ones had left, Forest Sweeper had been in constant communication with his kin, searching for more of the places where the Enemy had tried to hide. Forest Sweeper turned his head to the heavens and bellowed. His voice echoed across the wind and the sky, making the very world rumble in his wrath.

The sky flashed and a great aurora formed, covering the sky in maps and locations.

Maps and locations others saw.

=============================

All across the north, giant heads were raised and the world shook.

From out of the snows and the mists, titans advanced.

Members of the Heavenly Demons Organization that tried to flee on foot could only look on as the kings of the north marched, a mantle of storm and ice their panoply. Their crowns were as big as castle battlements, edifices of bone that let all know of their might and majesty.

In their coming was the unstoppable roll of thunder, their hooves shaking the firmament.

And in their passing was a world scoured clean.

==============================

A man descended from the heavens as the Thunderhooves finished off another group of stragglers.

Three great beasts paused, knowing that this man was beyond them. Yet still they formed up, steam issuing forth from their nostrils, glaring at the man before them

His feet touched the bare earth and he addressed them.

“Might you be kin of He Who Sweeps the Forest Floor Of Snow and Opens the Way?” he asked, his voice tinged with nobility.

“We have that honour,” the biggest of the beasts declared—and then, to their surprise, the man bowed.

“Xiao Ge, Elder of the Cloudy Sword Sect, greets the Righteous Heroes of the north,” he intoned, his hands clasped in the gesture of respect. “Shall we slay the Great Enemy together?”

The Spirit Beasts deliberated for a moment… before deciding that the arrangement was agreeable to them.

===========================================

The voice of the Emperor watched it all. He stood upon the air, his hands behind his back. He was serene.

He looked upon the devastation as a god, high above the concerns of the world.

The Voice was satisfied.

===================================

Yulong ran. He ran as hard as he could, as fast as he could, staying in the darkness. Staying barely one step again. Without Huian’s warning, he would be dead.

All he could do was curse. Curse and rage impotently as centuries of work were obliterated.

He could feel his freckles itching. He could feel the fury in his gut. He committed each of the fallen to his memory.

He could do nothing now but try to survive.

=========================

Upon a flying sword, Shen Yu stood. His smile was wide and toothy. He looked down at a sundered fortress, the only thing left of it a rent in the ground.

“See, Lu Ri? That is how you cut through defensive wards. Now, you try.”

“Yes, Master Shen,” the man stated, his voice mild. “Shall I attempt the next one?”

“Indeed you shall,” Shen Yu decreed.

He had sworn to scour the north—and now, he was filling his oath. Shen Yu could feel it in his bones.

Yulong manages to escape, but Shen Yu keeps his oath.

Comments

Oh absolutely! Saying sorry doesn't do shit. I'm thinking more along the lines of him surviving until the end where he finds redemption right before dying due to some grand final act of defiance like Darth Vader against the Emperor. Vader in Star Wars committed multiple horrific genocides and he will forever be known as a villain but at the end he tried to do 1 decent thing for his family. Ultimately, this is a fictional tale, so there is always the possibility of redemption.

Akki

I concur, kat, that the orders include suicide before surrender, but that probably applies to Yulong also. He's fleeing so he doesn't get caught and doesn't have to kill himself.

Mark Greenberg

No. I don't see redemption for him. He's not like Zang Sheng who did bad things but for a good cause and because that's the way he was taught. Yulong did horrible things to innocent people and ordered other to perform even more horrible things. Where do you think the artificial demons came from? We even know the name of one, Kang Yunru, Young Master of the Ice Wind Sect was turned into the artificial demon East Wind. Yulong has done too many vile things to too many people to be redeemed. That's like Hitler (or Himmler) saying "I'm sorry" and then all is forgiven.

Mark Greenberg

He specifically ordered the people under him to bring meiling to him "unspoiled". This implies that he at knows exactly what the people under him get up to and either at best doesnt care or at worst normally encourages it. I hope he dies in a hole, alone, in shame.

bioenthusiast

And speculation like this is why I like comments. People can be so clever, and sometimes what people predict actually happens, or lets me imagine it.

Cranky Otter

Elder Ge is Su Ge's grandfather. According to Book 2 ch 24 there are at least two other CSS Elders we haven't met, one who's on Personal Leave and another in Closed Door Cultivation (as were Yukong & Shou at the time).

Mark Greenberg

I had an epiphany now that SHI is here and Jin is growing shit that shouldn't be grown so easily will he be tasked with growing new ships or at the very least grow a ship for his disciples to travel easier?

ItWasIDIO!!

Oh he absolutely needs to be brought low! I just don't want him to die because he's interesting and because he is Mei's uncle.

Akki

I hope he dies though or wishes to at least cause he needs to be brought that low

Eli Loeb

But Hulan has been marked bt demon hunter Tigu.

Old Dog

Or butterfly affect.

Old Dog

Ah, yup. My son loves anamai, Dragon Ball Z, etc., but can I get him to listen to BOC? Nnoooo.

Old Dog

SO GOOD! Imagine your whole world just freezeing over. Frost creeping in from each side and with each word spoken the cold gets more intense. Fun fact; -40 is the same in F° and C° :D Though I imagine Master Forest Sweeper is more interested in -273°.

Jesper

As always, thank you for the chapter. When I read the chapter this morning I didn't have a chance to comment. Nice to see the edits and I whole heartedly agree that you did another outstanding job.

Old Dog

I kinda thought that, too... BUT!!!! Are we sure? Because sleep at this point would be a rather bad thing for Yulong? Maybe the Demonic Master - who is definitely not stupid - would have found something else to latch on to (into?) Yulong that would have been more... strategic?

Kat Wilton

I would agree with that, Mark, but I *think* the command also implied that the demonic cultivators *should* suicide as a last resort. YMMV ;-) But truthfully, I confess that I enjoyed Every. Single. Bit. of demonic cultivators getting their just desserts... But then, I can be a rather vengeful wench LOLOLOL

Kat Wilton

I hope Yulong finds redemption down the road after his Master eventually tries stealing his body. This guy is the embodiment of the quote by George Bernard Shaw "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". He is a properly interesting character and his mind is a treasure trove of lost, ancient knowledge.

Akki

Royal Road has the missing chapters restored, but I believe it's something that requires mod intervention on Space battles, likely similar with QQ.

Gray Code

Yulong didn't give suicide orders, he said "Retreat and burn it all to the ground." I take that to mean that instead of securing and packing experiments and documents and then escaping with them to other bases, he just wants everything destroyed (a much faster operation) before they flee.

Mark Greenberg

I missed the first email so I’m late to the game but I wrote an Unnecessarily Long comment instead of packing for Thanksgiving travel because I had to explode about how great this chapter was and have no irl people to understand. I really should go pack tho.

Cranky Otter

Angela, I think you make a reasonable point although I agree with the rebuttals. Your version is set up by the existence of the Zang Li plot. Without us as readers knowing anything about him changing (slightly) while on his victory walkabout, his actions toward Meihua were just Standard Cultivator rapey BS, just a guy being an entitled jerk. He didn’t need to be a demon for him to intiate that sequence of actions- fully backed by 2 friendly disciples of the SMS. He only needed to be a demon to get to this chapter, not to do what he did. I was personally disappointed that he was actually taken over by a demon because that kind of reasoning is very “not all men” to explain why his very common bad behavior happened. Which sets up the dynamic you clued into that in this story, the truly vile, if utterly commonplace, behaviors aren’t just the standard behavior of careless, thoughtless, entitled men, for which there are centuries of evidence that no demonic taint is needed to be cruel for fun or neglectful of those considered disposable, and considering most people disposable, but that the really bad ones are, in fact, demons, when it doesn’t take demons to get this behavior. Which is to say you are not wrong for pattern matching, given the Zang Li plot, but also I don’t think Elder Chen is demonic and further I will be disappointed if he is thus corrupted because it would be a cop out, rather than the fully ordinary villainy that results from powerful people being jerks after years of never being told “no”.

Cranky Otter

And these really are huge Thunderhooves, not mere moose.

Cranky Otter

‘..... Little worms, little worms, you are far beyond courting death.’ I think this may be the coldest line I have ever read, and it is SO GOOD!!!!

BlueMage Theneras

Lu Ri is ace, not Demi. There’s no degree of passion that will interest him. I think he’s either willing to do his duty if it comes to it, or was hoping his 20 years in the Azure Hills would allow other options to percolate for Su Ge. if they’re both ace (doesn’t seem to be the case) then they might marry and be happy doing their work solo or together while having a companion, while people stop pestering them about marrying. But a passionate partner isn’t going to be happy with a dispassionate duty spouse. She can find someone else, head out with the Storm Wings to party/rain destruction, or reveal she is fine with Lu Ri as is, or build her own harem.

Cranky Otter

Exactly! Hard to imagine just how capable they are without an example like this. Sure We had Lu Ri politely having tea after piling up a bandit gang and then conscripting 100 squabbling gangs into his personal information network but that’s a full adult cultivator against humans. Now I understand why Shen Yu was over confident about takibg Bi De & crew into a demon base.

Cranky Otter

that's why Xiulan on the outside (in young lady mode, not fa ram mode)

Baqc∞ART

Thank you for providing this service.

Cranky Otter

Didn’t quite mean to go on this long. TL;DR: Squee! Gushing admiration for a job well done.

Cranky Otter

and now, he was filling his oath. Shen-> fulfilling his oath

WyrdWizard

The weird tugging that was trying to lull him to sleep is definitely the Demonic Master doing something fucky.

Alex

Holy $/?:!!! That was EPIC! I had no idea the CSS could bring it like that. Their competence is very pleasing. TBH the battle scenes aren’t my favorites. But if you have to, best do it competently - I do like observing (real people’s or characters’) competence even outside my areas of interest. And they delivered a master class. Quite literally! I am entertained that Shen Yu is *still* managing to make this a training exercise. It is also good evidence that the CSS really does know their stuff, including how to teach the next generation, if they actually put their resolve in that direction instead of petty squabbling. If they could turn things around maybe the SMS can also be better people. (Granted most of the CSS on this trip are the Old Guard, who knew better, but were hidden away and who neglected the next generations, and weren’t the actively malicious and gleefully suppressing whole lines like most of the leaders in the SMS hierarchy.) I read this wondering if any/how many would be kept alive on purpose (and now have more, but not complete, certainty on that score, to be vague and not spoilery about it.) For Master Sweeper to already be on it, wow. Well done. I had considered they were digging up into the demonic ravine closer to the capitol but this makes more sense, and is also epic. Really had no idea you had this kind of Hand of God on Speed Dial action plan for the end of this volume. A little curious why Yulong gave su!cide orders to others but fled himself - it makes some sense given his “as long as one is alive, one can regroup” interior monologue, but I guess given his propensity to forcibly turn enemies into demons he’s very much a “the rules apply to thee but not to me” kind of guy and/or maybe he couldn’t save any one but himself even if he’d tried? … I guess I’ll have to keep reading to learn why he has plot armor besides being related to Meiling …. I don’t like battles because I don’t usually like destruction, do not enjoy seeing others injured, and death is so wasteful, but in the case of people/demons who forcibly override consent to turn enemies into ruinous creatures that will attack their former allies, I can actually appreciate it. If only the demons we know of weren’t so competent and kind to their friends, I wouldn’t be conflicted at all. So I am am still a tiny bit sad about the waste of life and resources because some of the demonic side actually seemed to mean well, if their well meaning is all about destruction of others, particularly by overriding their consent, by all means they are better off being atomized by the CSS & the Storm Wings.

Cranky Otter

See, the thing that made me feel this way is that Yulong felt something tugging on him trying to get him lulled to sleep during the middle of the evacuation. Now, sure dude could just be tired but more likely there's *something*

Krulla_Chief

Considering Yulong mentioned reprogramming meiling’s mind to sway her to his side, what’s to have stopped someone from doing that to him? It’s awfully suspicious!

Aesoir

10/10 chapter

Artur Vogt

It's somewhat of a cliche to have the old monster consume his apprentice to regain his power, but that is primarily because it fits so well with the incredibly selfish world view of demonic cultivators. It's likely he will do it because as Shen Yu noted the old monster will need centuries or longer to regain his lost power but consuming Yulong would reduce that dramatically. Maybe he won't but it DOES fit the character.

David Brewer

Casualfarmer edited the chapter. A reference to maomei was removed from the Ji Min part. Xiao Ge gave his sect's name, and a small section referencing the Imperial Herald was added. A couple other grammatical errors were fixed as well.

John Kionka

Su Ge is also apparently super into Lu Ri but too well trained to show anything but a modest and proper exterior. So in that way she is very much not like Tigu or Yin since neither of them have got time for that sort of nonsense. She's definitely a crouching tiger, hidden psycho but she does have her softer side.

Valderan

It appears some edits were made, a few text errors fixed, the section with the Herald added, etc. I'm guessing that was enough yo trigger a new email.

Matsc

Why did i just get a second email for this chapter?

wtdtd

Loved that scene when Shen Yu refused to give away their location to the Hand of the Emperor's face, but then nobody batted an eye once he gave the reason.

Emily Gurnavage

Yay for chapter edits!

WarStrider72

Weird, just got an email notification. Got excited, till I saw it was for this chapter.

Seaspike

Casual has changed it now so it’s only Min who is mentioned. It was probably a typo :)

Catherine

Min talks about Maomei being in awe as the construct rose, but also indicates that everyone except her sacrificed themselves to get the thing to rise. If Min is the only one left to see it rise, who’s Maomei?

Deadpan29

No one in particular. But I suppose giving this character a name makes a greater impact, than unnamed goon 99 getting crushed.

Fluffy druid

Elder Xiao Ge is the Black Clouds of the Silent Sky. He's Shen Yu's sworn brother, and one of the most powerful cultivators in the world (now that Shen Yu has been set back a Realm there's a very good chance he's the outright strongest at the moment). His moniker comes from his extreme proficiency with the Raging Cloudy Sword Formation, his version creates an impenetrable black cloud where his body and sword are everywhere and nowhere at once. Elder Ran is Shen Yu’s other sworn brother who stayed back at the CSS to prepare them for war — he’s probably a peer to Xiao Ge cultivation wise. Ran is apparently a bit uptight, and Shen Yu says at one point that Lu Ri reminds him a bit of Ran when he was younger. Elder Shou of the Hidden Forest is the herbmaster of the CSS - he gifted Jin a bunch of seeds that the CSS has never been able to grow, and had a minor existential crisis when Jin managed to grow basically all of them, including the incredibly rare and valuable silver yin lotus. Elder Yukong of the Subtle Scripture is the formation master of the CSS - she created the defensive formation that protects Hong Yaowu, and she's Elder Shou's wife. Elder Chen is the newest elder of the CSS, and it was his son Chen Li that nearly killed Jin at the beginning of the series. He's still an Elder, but he's definitely in the doghouse with the other Elders at the moment because Chen Li used his status as the son of an Elder to abuse his other sect mates while the rest of them were away from the sect, or in closed door cultivation. The Soaring Heavens Isle has a four-elder setup based on the motif of the four winds: Elder Tianzhe Minyan is the Falcon of the East Wind. She's Shen Yu's on-again off-again lover and she's Tsundere as fuck. She's a peer to Xiao Ge and Shen Yu in his prime, so if Xiao Ge isn't the strongest cultivator in the world right now then she is. She's gotten a lot of shit from her fellow SHI Elders over the years for her complicated relationship with Shen Yu, so when she immediately responded to Shen Yu's call for aid she didn't tell the other Elders where she was going or why. Elder Han Song is the Hawk of the West Wind. She's renowned for being the most foul tempered of the SHI Elders, but she has something of a soft spot for benevolent spirit beasts since her childhood dog Bau Bau gained intelligence and died protecting her hometown from raiders. Elder Baishi Lili is the Crane of the South Wind. She seems like the kind of person who enjoys stirring up trouble - which isn't particularly difficult given that Minyan's Tsundere as fuck and Song has a foul temper. Elder Dongmei is the Elder of the North Wind. We don't know very much about her since she wasn't in the Soaring Heavens Isle alt-verse story. Fengyan is the Emperor of the Crimson Phoenix Empire, and he seems to have something of a younger sibling relationship with Shen Yu. The Emperor is supposed to be the strongest person on the planet, but Fengyan is at a bottleneck, so he can only really hold his own against the true monsters of the world in his seat of power with the help of treasures and formations.

Alex

Elder Yukong is the formations master who was given Mei Mei’s formation and realized its value instantly. Her husband is Elder Shou, who is the one who sent Jin all those lovely new seasonin- I mean spiritual herbs. Elder Xiao Ge is Shen Yu’s oldest friend who grew up with him in the Cloudy Sword Sect, and is also the father of Xiao Su Ge (Lu Ri’s betrothed)

Merf

Okay, I give you that. It would have been a direct warning, I agree.

I don't think this complete and just has what CF has revealed. Id expect there are more elders either in seclusion or out on some long ranging mission/trip. https://beware-of-chicken.fandom.com/wiki/Cloudy_Sword_Sect

I want to see her drink some of the special mead and lose some of her inhibitions. Not anything crazy or scandalous, but enough that she feels embarrassed and tries to hide/apologize before Lu Ri finds her and reveals he is more hopeful for their marriage after seeing her inner passion.

Check out chapter 17 of this volume, the chapter called "In the Emperor's Name, Leave None Alive" they explain this in that chapter. Each Forest Sweeper uses their own body and soul to purge the demonic taint in the North which has existed due to a demon invasion around the time when Tianlan broke. Unless he manages to completely cleanse the corruption, he will never be able to leave the formation. If his time to die comes before completing the task, as was the case for every Forest Sweeper before him, then he will pass his core unto his apprentice to continue the task, until the day it is completely cleansed. That's why Shen Yu acknowledges Master Forest Sweeper and his entire line as Heroes and Martyrs in the same line as the Honored Founders.

Caoimhín

“Maomei had been in awe of the massive construct ” Who is Maomei? In other maters, I think the Plum Blossom’s Shadow are going to be tracking down remnants and stragglers for a while. Did the Shadows ever learn who they were working for?

Deadpan29

Hmm, could be, but it seems too much of a stretch to say that Elder Chen is possessed by a demon. We also have information from the Head of Senior Disciples (the penitent guy) as to how a good part of the mess was allowed to fester, and there wasn't anything demonic about it, not even something actively malicious, just apathy and carelessness. Little things that kept piling up in a very human way. We also have a recent bit of evidence that could be used to argue that Chen is not compromised: when Huian gets the report of strange movements of the Army Forged in the Crucible and Cloudy Sword Sect, it wasn't something solid, nor a direct warning, just a report of suspicious activity. Although Huian immediately knew that this couldn't be a coincidence, the report itself wasn't a direct warning for them. If Elder Chen was possessed, then they would have received a direct warning.

Caoimhín

But in that sense they are inverses, Su Ge defined himself as a beast that his grandfather managed to rectify, just like Tigu, instead yin was turned into a weapon and then begins his journey to give it meaning

Baqc∞ART

The resolution to Yin's character arc of trying to find her purpose in life was that she lives to fight and destroy evil; she's much more of a battle maniac than Tigu is. The only reason it took her so long to accept the fact that she lives to fight is that Miantao told her she shouldn't because of the guilt he felt about how he raised her to be a weapon. Miantao raised Yin to be the person she was always meant to be: the reason his actions are sinful isn't because of what he turned Yin into, it's because he did it for all the wrong reasons.

Alex

I agree I was hoping the Demonic Cultivators was going to be a long-term background villain rather than one and done. My only hope is that this is only their north bases in the snow, because it sounded like Huian was somewhere else entirely. Sounds like to the west coast, which will be interesting if Chyou + Wa Shi end up going that way for their food expedition.

Andrew Wong

Yes, but I thought more about Tigu because that is his innate nature just like Su Ge, while Yin is the result of Miantao's upbringing, also Su Ge's scene reminded me of Tigu in the Hill of Torment

Baqc∞ART

No, just...stretched from what i understood, its whybhes training a successor, because hes reaching the end of his tenure.

Michael Zalesny

Is there a guide to the names of the masters of CSS/SHI/etc

Dominic Antonio

I think she's basically just Yin with a veneer of being a proper Young Mistress.

Alex

He's dead!?

Xiao Su Ge is a Xiulan on the outside and a Tigu on the inside, she will get along well with Xianhua

Baqc∞ART

Who is “Maomei”? Was this supposed to be “Ji Min,” or was it a different person?

Barry Morgan

The cadaverous spirit beast was Master Forest Sweeper (in his true form), definitely a good guy.

Barry Morgan

I'm surprised they didn't stand a chance. It was epic, but honestly, I thought they would find a bigger problem than any of them thought, and it would put them on the back foot. I didn't expect them to just be wiped out. Also, Who was that dead spirit beast is he a good guy or a bad guy?

C

I think a good twist would be if Shenong was once a demon general who lead rebellion and was made the first heavenly demon.

Timothy Dana

Dang! Talk about an OP sect! I mean, we all knew the CSS is THE top sect and SHI is strong, but dang! Talk about kickin' butt and being too busy even to take names!!

Edit: now done I aint even done yet, but I gotta comment on how insanely hype this scene from Yulong's POV is. Think I just finished it, after his whispered prayer. I love love love how much effort you always put into the enemies and side characters and even throwaways (or seemingly throwaways, some have come back to my surprise). . Wow, that was a wild one. The whole thing. Kinda surprised Yulong is escaping again with so many forces brought to bear at once, but I suppose we do need someone to warn the rest of the Demons to make for a good war.

Emily Gurnavage

@Caomihin and Harish, I see your pov but just stretch a tad and see the centuries of neglect as an opportunity the demons saw to ease their way into the stronghold of their greatest enemy. Would they do it with gong or a whisper? Would subtly encouraging Chen to continue ignoring, allowing his son's (and others) bullying be the way? He was the only Elder, the youngest elder, awake and there day to day. Why wouldn't the demons see that as an opportunity for chaos? Evil doesn't often come fully formed and ready to rumble. It's insidious and I maintain that Chen is being subtly affected. Harish, thanks.

Angela Roberts

The swords unsheathed.

Storyhunter

@Angela Roberts, I am sorry about that comment. I mistook your statement for something else. As for whether Elder Chen is a demon or demon puppet, I agree with @Caoimhín. Elder Chen is the garden variety asshole found in most xianxia novels. Combined with the fact that he was an Elder of one of the most powerful sects in the land, he let it get to his head. And it took the threat of the Unconquered Blade's vengeance and Elder Ge's ire to start putting him back on the Path of the Cloudy Sword Disciples. No demonic shenanigans here. Just your average idiot FAFO. And considering CF is very good at foreshadowing such instances, that fact that he has not once indicated anything about Elder Chen makes it very unlikely.

Harish

@Angela Roberts But nothing we have seen indicates demonic behavior from Elder Chen. The guy is not demonic, he's just someone who spoiled his son and protected him from repercussions. Basically a corrupt jerk, but not a demon. Besides, it's not like Elder Chen's son was alone in his behavior. The Cloudy Sword Sect was corrupted by bad behavior for centuries at least, and all the Elders turned a blind eye to it. It's not something that a single person caused, nor is it something caused by a single generation, no matter how much blame they put on the penitent Senior Disciple guy. The actions of the son of Elder Chen were something the disciples of the sect saw as typical. It wasn't like he was the only one doing that. It was already accepted as a fact of life in the sect. We have confirmation, from Elder Ge's own POV, that he hadn't visited the Outer Sect since his boyhood years. That means that for centuries, this guy hadn't bothered to even glance at a huge part of his sect, even after becoming an Elder. Because he saw it as beneath his notice. The buildings of the Sect itself were in disrepair, and nobody cared. Every Elder knew all this was happening, they just didn't see any issue with it. They did not care. And then they deluded themselves into thinking that things weren't so bad. Then Jin's incident happened, and it served as a wake-up call. The ONLY reason the punishment and reformation were carried out was because of how close that conduct had brought them to great danger since it nearly made Shen Yu their enemy. If it hadn't been Shen Yu's grandson who was injured to the point of abandoning the sect, then they would have kept doing the same things.

Caoimhín

Tftc!

James Faulkner

@Harish, I know who the characters are and not once have I mistaken Elder Chen for Zang Zeng. Why would you think that? If you reread what I just wrote you'll see that I'm quite clear on who Elder Chen is. And I STILL say he's been affected by the demons.

Angela Roberts

I think Tigu & the rest will get along great with Xiao Su Ge if she shows this side more than the ice princess that is expected kinda like Lan Lan

ItWasIDIO!!

Whoa I didn't actually expect THIS degree of success!

MatrixM

It be kinda cool if the old monster decides simply to raise up his discipline instead shows while evil there is a reason people followed him.

Vicente Huerta

@Angela Roberts "Zang Zeng" is the Elder of the Shrouded Mountain Sect, Father of Zang Li who got possessed and the guy who invaded the Azure Hills to find Jin and got infected by a Puppet Worm. Elder Chen is the Elder of the Cloudy Sword Sect whose son nearly killed Jin Rou, was lambasted by Elder Ge and was content that the only casualty of Shen Yu's revenge was the death of one son. This is the one who also recommended that the mortals be allowed to take the Trials to join the Cloudy Sword. They are entirely different people.

Harish

Yeah it was definitely phrased like that, which is why I’m glad for the subversion. They don’t need the researchers to obtain the knowledge, they already have all the info that they desire.

Axavia

I though that little Ji Min was going to survived and get captured instead of be killed without a though.

Arlano

You guys aren't alone! I have nobody in real life to fangirl with. I keep trying to get my daughter into it, but she keeps putting it off. All she has to do is read one totally charming book!

Laura Hemly

@Mark Greenberg, I want to agree with bc obviously but at the same, Dude?

Angela Roberts

Thanks for the chapter! Enjoyed it and now let's see this finished in a chapter or three and the elders see the farm.

Justin

There's a joke in there *somewhere . . .* :D

Geoffrey Sullivan

We can but *hope.* :)

Geoffrey Sullivan

@Gray Code, okay, perhaps not a puppet worm. But, have you forgotten that he was the father of the boy who killed Jin? He allowed his boy to bully, maim, and kill, ignored (at best) the behavior of the other disciples eventually "corrected" by Elder Ge, and had apparently no issues with the signs of rot both Ge and Ran found alarming. Plus, in meeting with newly awakened Elders Shou and Yukong, he's the one who brings up admitting mortals to their mountain. I could be "jumping at shadows" but I don't think I am. I think he doesn't know how influenced he is by whatever means the demons are using.

Angela Roberts

I feel like Yulong is gonna get got in some form of confrontation with Jin and/or Meiling. I mean the freckle focus with him is setting it up so cleanly

Bruh-Man

"Instead of a dull, dark pearl that should have appeared, showcasing a destroyed formation, instead, the dot was yellow." One of those "instead"s should probably go.

Andrew Denton

I would be legitimately disappointed if the old demon took over Yulong’s body. It’s such a basic bitch demonic cultivator move, and their merry band of fuckheads is so dangerous because they continuously prove themselves to be a cut above that. The only way I could set it working is if CF wanted to do a “history repeats itself” type deal where the successor of Xiaoshi and the wicked descendant of the Azure Emperor clashed once more, but I can think of half a dozen more interesting ways to go about it off the top of my head. The front runner would be for the Heavenly Demons to take all that work they’ve done with possession techniques, soul-automated puppets, and improved artificial demons, and just make their master a new body. Even if it isn’t “and improved” as well, the old demon is primarily an intrigue and research build, his raw cultivation is a far less threat compared to the experience and knowledge he could provide his disciples as the hunt continues. A runner up in coolness but not so much in terms of probability is that the old demon ends up joining the remains of his soul to a chunk of the Demon Realm and becomes a Nega Earth Spirit, with Yulong as his contractor.

Ichypa

Shen Yu, should be noted, is having a very good week after that brutal fight.

Randall Norman Pick

And these were people who had a chance at defending themselves. 0.0

Randall Norman Pick

The CSS has flying sword artifacts, just not under normal use. The rest of the CSS disciples showed up riding them, presumably a spare was brought for Lu Ri. Chapter 62 "...travelled upon the weapons of the Cloudy Sword Sect, unsealed for war."

Haley Shepard

Looks like Xiao Su Ge finally worked out all her frustrations! And Yulong runs away like an evil xianxia villian! Next up, the glory that is Fa Ram will be seen by the Elders!

WarStrider72

Someday, that will be the Disciples of Fa Ram. Yin will clearly be like Su Ge, having the time of her life enjoying a good fight. Bi De will be more like Lu Ri.

M e

I imagine it started as "the only thing he could do now was survive." That seems like the kind of mistake I make a lot, I go back to edit something to better phrasing and accidentally a word.

Southern Mountains Loose Cultivator

Yup. They're basically Shonen Anime characters, every one of 'em. It's like if the normals knew about Shinigami in Bleach or something similar.

Just A Dude

So uh, Yulong is absolutely gonna get taken over by that old monster demonic cultivator, huh.

Krulla_Chief

Also loving how each person or group is dealing with a demonic base in their own unique way. Even the forest sweeper is getting in on it and his response is absolutely fitting. Glad that the empire has finally learned the truth of the Thunderhooves and their long sacrifice. This chapter gave me chills!

seth4bucks

To hijack a well known saying, something righteous this way comes . . . and it's freaking terrifying. I find it satisfying that the demons are the ones running scared. They SHOULD know just a taste of the dread and fear they have caused or planned to cause. It's the least they could do.

seth4bucks

“of the miners saving the barest bits of dirt “ -> shaving, “he was filling his oath” -> fulfilling- edits

The text said two new swords joined them. That's one for Shen Yu and one for Lu Ri. In the past, Shen Yu has carried others on HIS sword, not created a second one for them. Why waste his time controlling two separate swords?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

WolfKnight22

@Angela Roberts - Puppet worms are described as short-term assets, While I can't find the specific comment in my discord search, I believe they're typically good in a host for up to a couple days, before the host dies. We've not seen anything from CSS Elder Chen that would require him to be Puppet Wormed, nor would any of the information the HDS has about their mobilization require one. As a result, I disagree with your conjecture that Chen has a puppet worm. Edit: Found the post I was thinking of on Spacebattles: https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/beware-of-chicken-xianxia.910799/post-103897792

Gray Code

Elder Chen?? The only Elder Chen I know of is from the CSS and it has never been indicated he has a puppet worm in his head and if Zang Sheng can overpower his, I'm sure an Elder of the Cloudy Sword could kill it or bring it to the notice of the other Elders. Plenty of personality issues to iron out but nothing to lose sleep over.

Harish

He could do nothing now was survive. -> but survive.

WyrdWizard

Pretty epic!

Namorat

This. Was. AWESOME. PS: "He did not sleep once, even when he felt exhausted, and even when he felt an odd tugging, trying to lull him to sleep. " Is that the Demonic Master trying to possess Yulong or his Divination Art trying to warn him to sleep so he could get a vision?

Caoimhín

Scooby doo: if it wasn’t for those meddling (old farts) kids! Definitely a rough draft take. - Its already not present in the above patreon post. Only the email notification retains that juicy morsel.

Jesus Herbert Walker Christ. Okay, NOW I get why mortals are terrified of cultivators.

JW Benjamin

‘Something somthing one day I’ll get those pesky immortals.’ I can’t tell if this was left over from drafting or if this was intended…

Armo

From the subtlety of a formations master hacking a base and turning the security against the occupants, to the Dumdums. A beautiful array of destruction, and all of it effective.

Daniel Mountain

I assume he is flying on Shen Yu's sword. Though I am pretty certain there are also artifacts that allow a cultivator to fly if they couldn't otherwise. There are definitely swords that make the cultivator fly, even if it's usually the other way around.

Drakenclaw

Right, they've been playing the long game for over a century intending to take the Empire. Remember when the Emperor and Shen Yu were talking post huge demon battle and the Emperor referenced the thousand year challenge? They thought it was just that location but I'm pretty sure that was the distraction meant to lull their concerns and the diviner's warnings. Now, they'll recover enough to see how huge the demon infiltration is. The demons are running south to recoup.

Angela Roberts

Yeah but it's not in the book, so it skipped a lot of shit before jumping to the current available chapters

Southmonk

The Storm Wings just wiping the base off the map was amazing. Especially contrasted with everyone else. I think they might become fast friends with Su Ge. Makes me want to see her show up in the SHI AU

Anzer'ke

@Peter Gerganov, I like that plan! The Plums get in on the eternal war. Yes.

Angela Roberts

Did Yulongs friends Beidou and Zhigong also survive and run with him?

Catherine

Yeah, I'm still sure Elder Chen has a puppet worm in his head. I love your idea of using Yun Ren's illusions to get pics out. I was initially disappointed that this battle occurred at the end of this book but realized the longer campaign is ahead. One thing though, Meiling is going to have to get much better at poisons and fighting since her uncle survived!

Angela Roberts

This is why I haunt the comments, so I can fangirl with other readers!

Angela Roberts

I am with you there. None of the readers in my family or friends reads this genre.

Melanie Me

Unlikely. In Book 3, Ch 25, when Lu Ri was running back to Pale Moon Lake City to meet with Jin and annoyed he didn't have a flying sword, his thoughts were that HE was lacking causing him to have to run. The paragraph reads that he's lacking in ability, not just lacking in equipment. As with Xiulan, it's the cultivator that makes the sword fly, it's not the sword that makes the cultivator fly.

Mark Greenberg

"Perish" downright chilling that was.

Wyatt

But if you keep going north eventually you're going south, uh well unless this is flat xanxia? Do we know that yet? I would love to see jin say something and have gramps be like what? No the world is flat I've seen the edge myself.

Wyatt

From the looks of it, they got an hour or two at best. But yeah, you cannot empty entire bases in that time while also attempting to erase all your tracks, information and save your personnel. Something has to give. And in this case, it was the entire northern stronghold. And I really can't wait for the day when Yulong gets his ass handed to him. Bastard is the typical entitled Cultivation MC-syndrome character who needs a good dose of Beheading and Burning.

Harish

Corrections: "He could do nothing now was survive." - "He could do nothing now but survive." "Staying barely one step again." - "Staying barely one step ahead again." REVIEW: Loved seeing all the Scooby Doo fans in the comments. "If it wasn't for those meddling juniors..." This, this is what should happen to conspiracies. And just think, Jin was the catalyst that started the world on this path. Otherwise... well, we have been given a glimpse of the Darkest Timeline. Harnessing demons for power without any side effects? My brothers in cultivation, you were ready to obliterate an entire province as a distraction. You are DEMONS already. Minyan is the best. Commanding the vermin to death was pure fucking BADASS. Yukong's skill in the Dao of Hacking is truly unparalleled. Su Ge is getting all the fun. Damn it, I want to shout to the heavens. I really hope they don't forget about scouring the rest of the Empire. Also, the could use Yun Ren's Illusions and the memories of those of Fa Ram to distribute the likeness of Yulong, Huian and the rest to the other cultivators. Although such a vast conspiracy cannot just go unnoticed. Which means there are players across the Empire with a stake in it and will respond appropriately. And CSS, SHI, Fa Ram and Shen Yu have their work cut out for them. THIS WAS THE MOMENT I WAS WAITING FOR!! THANK YOU CF!!

Harish

Let me join in!! EUREKA! Absolutely loved the moment when the Demonic Conspiracy turned on its head and get slaughtered by the Titans. And that moment of pure awesome from each Cultivator was just too much. Was stuck in the office so I could not shout but my CTO did ask what the good news was. Apparently, I was smiling too much

Not only that first incident, he recovered from that very well. He doubled down at the first chance he had by trying to take Tigu, and that is truly where it all ended. Standard cultivator horniness may have started them down this path, but standard cultivator pettiness is what sealed the heavenly demon’s fates.

WonderBread459

CringeWorthyStudios

Is Lu Ri flying on his own sword? When did he learn to do that? When last seen he was running to get to Fa Ram and help Jin, before he was asked to turn around to find where the enemy came from. If Shen Yu is carrying him why aren't they flying on one large sword, which is what Shen Yu has used in the past to carry others with him.

Mark Greenberg

It pays to have friends in high places. It’s a shame they figured it out before the axe fell but I suppose a few minutes warning would only save a bare few.

Cj

He did the best he could with what he knew at the time. It wasn't good enough.

Alex Rahr

A really enjoyable chapter, thanks ☺️ I’m quite sure there are bases all over the empire, and probably beyond it (not only at the north but maybe on the southern continent as well) as the master had at least a thousand years invested in developing and preparing to take down the empire completely. Probably we will see a proud roster, his ladies and some other farm animals (is a dragon considered a farm animal now?) encountering them in their travels.

Idan tal

Did Lu Ri just get a power upgrade granted personally by Shen Yu? Can’t wait for Senior Brother to go H.A.M. on the next base!! Thank you CF!

Ender419

That, or if Lu Ban just wasn’t a horny little idiot in the first place.

CringeWorthyStudios

Yulong doesn't know but his two subordinates who fought Bi De, Beidou & Zhigong, know and they should be among the survivors since they were told to evacuate right away. His master knows too, and since the old demon is probably just waiting for him to fall asleep so they can communicate, he might find out from Jingsheng.

Mark Greenberg

The Storm Wings ROAR!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

Bable Zmith

Only his master received that divine revelation.

Aki_Iokua18

going even norther than north

Hunter Brown

Exactly, Fluffy druid. Their goal is to take over the EMPIRE, not some province out in the boonies. They wouldn't want to tip their hand until they were ready for their master stroke.

Mark Greenberg

There's definitely going to be a second, quieter phase to this conflict. I expect best boi Lu Ri, and his spymaster skills, to come in clutch in the coming shadow war.

Peter Gerganov

Same reason you obey all the traffic laws when you've got dead bodies in the trunk of your car.

Mark Greenberg

I agree that when he sleeps his master will talk to him, POSSIBLY try to take over his body but probably not. I don't agree that he lost his best friends. His two subordinates who fought Bi De, Beidou & Zhigong, were told to evacuate right away so they should make it to a base that's NOT in the north and so isn't slated for immediate destruction. Huian will also survive since they're in the south, and their survival pleased Yulong.

Mark Greenberg

To think. If yu long simply didn't send his forces south, they would have defeated Shen Yu and no one would know what happened north until it was too late.

Oh nvm I refreshed and it was changed. Still needs another edit tho.. should be “but survive” instead of “was survive”

Zero Wrath

“Something somthing one day I’ll get those pesky immortals.” Is this supposed to be this? Or a placeholder for edit? Could be a Scooby doo reference? If it wasn’t for you pesky kids, I would have gotten away with it too! (I think that’s Scooby doo anyways..)

Zero Wrath

A fabulous scorched (or frozen) earth moment

Yeah, I caught that too. It only works as a sentence if it's, "he could do nothing now but survive." There's another sentence that should end with "ahead" instead of "again".

Not that she'll acknowledge him unless he removes the demonic association and makes amends (somehow) for all the other stuff he's done.

I love that this entire thing is just because Lu Ban was too horny to keep it in his pants. If he hadn’t tried to bother Meihua then he would have gone undetected in the SM sect and none of this would have happened. It is not, that those demonic cultivators could not conquer the Azure Hills, it is more, that they would not. After all, what is there of use in that province? Jin is a pretty new developement.

Fluffy druid

Pretty sure any parts missing from QQ have been sacrificed to the dreaded demonic master Publisher. Only the Heavens know if they'll ever return... they might still be here on Patreon, perhaps.

Oni

Does Yulong even know that Bi De is a chicken?

CringeWorthyStudios

It's nice to see the overwhelming force of the high tier cultivators. We've seen a lot of mid and low tier cultivators fighting cultivators that never trained in battle (the main cast) so it's kinda nice to see the difference between pure combat style sects and fa ram.

Nicholas Tran

Yulong is Meiling’s uncle, yes.

CringeWorthyStudios

If they hated him before ...they really, really hate him now. And you know, maybe don't give your one shot at an ancient technique to the guy with tons of ego and little sense. Also, I think the Demon Master had gotten a bit complacent and too confident. I don't think there's a way to predict this series of coincidences and connections.

Angela Roberts

It is extremely satisfying for them all to get stomped. Shen yu handing out base destruction like he's Oprah

Lonnie

He could do nothing now was survive. He could do nothing but survive?

mhaj58

It would make a power creep situation, if these people were strong enough to hold even a single second against Elders of CSS they could have taken ove the Azure Hills and not hide like cowards in the shadows, Shen Yu and Lu RI constantly say it would be a flick of a finger to conquer the Azure hills, and the demons with an Imperial realm Expert couldn't do it. So it had to be shown how meaningless their plans and machinations were in the face of real power.

Arnon Parenti

Angela Roberts

Great chapter!

JC Weiss

I mean, DAMN! Shou bathes them in poison, Yukon turns their defenses against them, Minyan literally glares them to death, the twins drown them, the truly scary lich (?) Spirit Beast dunks them in hate, and the Thunderhoofs sweep the rest to death. The imagery is fantastic! Yukong and the Master survived though. I mean, I guess some had to but those two are too intelligent. Meanwhile, Lu RI, is all, shall I?

Angela Roberts

I think he is the link to Mei Mei's family.

This is kind of what happens to an opposing faction if they don't have the muscle to contest the best of their best. It's just a mop up operation with 4 Imperial Realm Cultivators at least going on the offensive.

Arcman

Incredible chapter, absolutely worth the build up and so much freaking fun!!! Thank you, your poetic side really came out on this one and I love it. Now to go back for a second read through. 🥹

Angel

(“Perish.” she commanded her foes, like an Empress commanded her ladies to make her tea.) *Dies*

Duke of Coffee

Xianada Voldemort has to be so pissed right now.

Brendan

Nice, loved so much in this one.

Seaspike

Kickass!

H

"And I would have gotten away with it too, if not for that pesky Cloudy Sword sect"

Gafgarion

I was kind of expecting the bulk of this to take a whole book, but now it's just leftovers

Ryan

Not yet at least you need to have an reoccurring antagonist every so often

Brendan

Something somthing one day I’ll get those pesky immortals. - don't forget to add and that little chicken too.

Tim Johnson

Damn look what happens when you cause the Old Man to put the gang back together

Michael Wheaton

Ah, Xiao Su ge. A woman who would butcher your enemies and smile while doing it. Lut Ri truly had the luck of the Heavens.

Mad Max

Is this where there's a month break?

Southmonk

Not gonna lie, I’m pretty sure my neighbours think I’m crazy now because I spent this entire chapter laughing maniacally. Thanks for the chapter!

CringeWorthyStudios

This chapter was very satisfying. The only thing that would make it better would be Shen Yu catching yulong.

Justin Barnett

TYFTC!

Veltlore

Yulong and the terrible, no good, horrible, awful, very bad day (the sequel). Loved Master Forest Sweeper’s “gift”. They got what they wanted. And congratulations to Su Ge for her being able to finally have some fun. I feel like Yulong still has a part to play in the story, simply because I’m hoping this becomes a catalyst for more members of Fa Ram to head out on adventures outside the Azure Hills.
