My Ultimate Music Theory Workout Revealed

This year I went to the NAMM conference in Anaheim California. It's where musicians from around the world get together and hang out. While I was there, my friend Roy Ziv showed me an exercise that's an absolute game changer. Perfect for those who want huge results with minimal effort. This just may be the ultimate way to practice music theory!

⚡️SOMETHING BIG IS COMING

The other day Discord member Slambodian Jones asked me to make a video on the circle of 5ths. After thinking about it, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to reveal the game changing exercise I learned at NAMM! This post is just a sneak peek on what I'm up to. Look for the full course to drop soon. If you've ever felt limited by your fretboard knowledge, or frustrated playing the same patterns over and over check this out 👇

⭐️ HOW IT WORKS

The purpose of this theory exercise is to become comfortable playing in different keys. The backing track below goes through every mode of the major scale. Your job is to switch modes everytime the backing track does! This is really fun once you get the hang of it. It's kinda like when you get a pump at the gym, except instead of your muscles getting pumped, it's your mind muhahaha! Now let me explain in more detail how to practice this incredible exercise and the benefits you'll receive

🛑 PRACTICE STRATEGY

To practice, cue up the backing track and just listen to it first. The time signature is 4/4 and I spend two bars, or 8 beats on each mode. Use the tab below to shift shapes every two bars. Listen for the unique feelings each mode contains and just play random notes from the patterns. This is definitely a more advanced exercise but anyone can do it if they play slow enough. The main benefit you'll receive from this routine is getting a taste for tonal variety in the circle of 5ths. Of course it's a massive help to improve your improvising skills as well. It's also fantastic for developing song ideas. Finally, it forces you out of your pentatonic box comfort zone! There's no choice but to sink or swim. Ask me any questions you like about this post or the upcoming course in my Discord community. Anyone in the $10 tier level has access to discord. See you over there and happy practicing!
