How To Destroy Writer's Block FOREVER

I hate the feeling of having something to say...but you can't say it. I used to dream about songs I was going to write. I could hear the music in my mind....but I didn't know how to make the souns in my head real. In this post I'll give you 3 tips to banish writer's block forever muhahaha!

1. SACRED RITUAL

The first step to writing your best music is setting aside time to hone your craft. Yesterday I went for a long walk in the hills to get my mind right. Think about how you want your music to sound AWAY from your instrument. This frees us from technical limitations and allows us to DREAM. Envision the end result...what emotions will your listeners feel? What tone, textures and techniques will you use to bring your music to life? Enter a deep meditative state. It's like a hypnotic trance you can't be shaken from. I even get my favorite snacks to increase the anticipation. I had some Kombucha, whiskey and seasoned salami during my writing session yesterday!

2. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Sometimes the right ideas aren't flowing from your fingers. No matter what you try, it's like you're stuck playing the same old sh!t over and over. A great way to end this vicious cycle is by taking in new sources of inspiration. Watch a film with a great score, or listen to a new style of music. Meeting new people and having novel experiences can enlighten your perspective as well. Studying music theory is another fantastic way to decrease the latency between your mind and your fingers. For example, if I'm not really feeling sad or happy....I know the dorian mode is the perfect vehicle to express my current state!

3. DISCIPLINE

The truth is, writing music is just like any skill, it's takes practice. Even if you don't feel like it, schedule time to work on the art of composition. It's just like exercise. If you do 100 push ups everyday, I promise you're gonna get a muscular chest. In the same way, if you write 5 riffs every week, it won't be long until you start making some bangers!
