Left alone by a gloating, jubilant Sephiroth, Cloud stares after him, his eyes narrowed with hatred and his teeth bared in anger. But, in the ensuing silence, as his helplessness and failure overcome the sudden surge of adrenalin, the boy puts back his head with a sigh and lets his eyes close. Slumped against the pole to which he is bound, the young warrior faces up to his defeat, to having been outwitted by his mortal foe. And, then, his eyes open again and he cranes back his head, twisting his gaze to look at the chains restraining his wrists. They are not attached to the pole, merely looped about them. Might it be possible to work them either over or off one end of the crossbar? Surely it was worth a try….. With new determination Cloud strains upwards, lifting himself as high as he can, feeling the taut stretch in his abdominal muscles as he reaches up, striving to lift the chain-length over the bar.

It soon becomes clear that the upper bar is too high, that the chain is too short to lift over it; stretch as much as he might the manacles about his wrists impede the progress of the chain well before it can top the pole. But, that still leaves the chance of drawing it far enough to escape the end of the crossbar. With another deep breath and with his head forced hard back, Cloud stretches himself, seeking to free the chain – and himself with it. The strain in his body is painful, his breath ragged as he struggles at full stretch, the chain grating against the steel of the pole. And then, with a final effort, the chain slides free of its mounting! Cloud gasps with mingled effort and relief – and extends his fettered right arm as far as it will go. But that brings his left wrist up tight against the upright; he remains bound to the pole… All the same, his hopes have risen; now he will try to free the chain from its mounting on the left side – and that will give him enough slack, perhaps, to unloop it and free himself from the pole.

With another deep breath, aware that Sephiroth may soon return, the boy begins a further bid for freedom……
