Not a spoiler, just info that non-Chinese/non-book-readers might miss: The black smoke is meant to represent "resentful energy". Many things can become imbued with resentful energy if they were used for evil, in contact with evil, or suffered evil. Yin iron, the tortoise of slaughter sword, a ghost or corpse that died a violent death, etc etc. Yeah, Lan Zhan sometimes disappears for a few episodes. This is Wei Wuxian's story, and Lan Zhan is an important part of it, but Wei Wuxian is the main character, so we usually follow him.
