But because English is designated as the international language of trade, many people learn it as a second language. So including not native speakers, 1.5 billion people speak English while 1.1 billion speakers Mandarin (these numbers are approximations obv). So Mandarin is the “dominant language” if you are only referring to native speakers but if an alien was scanning the planet for the most dominant language, they would 100% chose English
