He said he was "confined in a cage for over a century". When they captured him, they were talking about having lost their sons in World War 1 battles, so that suggests that he was freed around present time. 2016 would have been 100 years from the battle mentioned. The son was still alive because of the extended lifespan benefit of the things they stole from him.
