Sad to say Shan, real fur is sold in Australia. The only prohibited fur there is dog and cat fur (what monster would do such a thing). Hey that magician is Penn Jillette of the Penn and Teller fame. They are famous for doing magic, then telling the audience how it is done. They also had a TV show called Bullshit where they exposed all kinds of scams, lies and frauds. They have appeared in many movies and TV shows almost always as magicians. Yeah, there are all kinds of holes in this one. Hypnosis actually working in people is not that common, less then half of all people are susceptible. You have to be a willing participant and you never do anything you find morally unacceptable.

He also sold Joey the encyclopedia in Friends.

I'm curious if Shan recognized Penn Jillette from Pen and Tell? If she said it, I missed it. He's the "fall guy," who was hypnotized to killed the doctor and was told to go up the ladder and jump. I'm maybe a little surprise Penn in this; mostly because of its uses magic in such a gimmicky way; and exaggerates it's scope by so much. Like, hypnosis is real, but it can't make you do anything you don't want to do; it can't make you kill someone or hurt yourself. If Shan isn't familiar with Penn and Teller, or maybe just didn't recognize him (he's got much more of a baby face in this episode than he does now), she should look up on YouTube Penn and Teller's Fool Us; where magicians/illusionists put on their act for Penn and Teller (and and audience) and try to do new routines Penn and Teller can't figure out how it was done. And some people fool them. And there's something of a Buffy connection, as Alyson Hannigan was their host for a couple of seasons. She would introduce the acts and sometimes get roped into the acts.

My understanding of a source being "off the record," is that it's still information a reporter can use in their investigation; they just can't print it and cite that person as a source. But they can cite the information if they corroborate it independently and cite the alternate source. Otherwise, speaking off the record would be effectively pointless; you might as well never learn about what they know if it's something that can be used to further the investigation. The reporter is just not going to put the onus of that information of the person who isn't willing to be on the record about it. Conversely, someone can be cited anonymously, if they're so inclined; and it be printed as credible if the information can be substantiated with additional proof. At least in the US, freedom of the press is a protected right under the constitution (in theory, at least); and many journalists have been jailed for contempt of court for not revealing confidential sources.
