I get the Hecules/Xens feel about the show. I will say I like this better than those. They always struck me as a little more "tongue in cheek". Somewhat silly. This doesn't feel that way to me. In episode 4, Zeb knew the child wasn't his because he was using magic contraceptive. To prove this he has Kahlan use to Confessor powers to see if he is lying. She asked if he uses the spell every time he has sex. He has except once the time he got Richards grandmother pregnant. This is the secret he tells her. Since she can tell if he lies, she now knows he was using contraceptive while having sex with that woman and the child can not be his.
