A few questions.

Hello, everyone.

About a month ago we published the first announcement of a new project. And this news was generally received positively. Yes, there were those who said that we are going to fail, because it is a game with a female protagonist. That’s a bit of a strange statement, since I have seen how much money games with female protagonist earn, and they earn a lot. However, the fact is that we do not really understand the principles of this genre so well, and that's exactly where we need some advice. But I'll talk about that a little bit later.

For now, I'll tell you about how the development is going.

While the programmer was writing the main part of the game engine, I was working on the interface. Now we are creating buttons, icons, menus, etc. All this is necessary for the realization of various side activities in the game. Also, a lot of time this month was devoted to the story part. The first released version will contain three large story days and part of the city, with additional activities and mini events. There will be a lot of content for a first version, in size it will probably be like DLC. As for the release on Steam, that will happen after 1-2 updates. I would like for Steam version to have more content than just a couple of hours, more like 4-5 hours at least. In any case, we will no longer work with episodes, but early access is inevitable.

And now for the questions about the game.

When I decided that the new game would be about a woman, I decided to play projects with a similar setting.

Question 1:

It's very common that alternative romantic relationship options, in the form of men, are so... well, how shall I put it…. unpleasant. I'm not even talking about appearance, I myself do not understand nearly anything about male beauty, but these alternative romantic options are in character and behavior, extremely repulsive people. Is this necessary for a game of this kind?

Question 2:

Content with people who are older. So far, we haven't added anything like that and if we do, it will be only if we are directly interested in them. There is one model, a large man... is it mandatory to use it? I do not wish to offend anyone if anything, all people are worthy of love, it's just that the genre of games and the genre of cinema always embellishes everything a little. If it hadn’t, Fiona's girls would look different too (and not just them).

Why I’m asking, 99% of the projects I've seen are really made like a copycat. And is there any point in trying to do something your own way... it's a rhetorical question. Developers are not fools. They do what makes money. Well, of course, within the limits of their own morality, which is different for everyone.

At the moment, the heroine's husband is quite a handsome man, he has a normal penis, and he generally satisfies the heroine. They have a normal relationship, though not without friction. The other men are also not without their charm. So far, we're going down this path, but maybe that's a mistake and it won’t resonate with the target audience. I'm not sure I want to do what I've seen in other projects, but I really want the money. I guess we're getting old. Once upon a time it wasn't so important.

Overall, I’m looking forward to the comments, especially from fans of this genre. What is important to you in games of this kind and whether you really need to have the things described in question 1-2.

That's all for now. Thanks for your interest in the project.

A few questions. A few questions. A few questions.

I'm perhaps oldfashioned (or call me even a redneck, if you want to) but men-with-men relationship,,, well, are not my cup of tea, at least not to play in a game

It's hard to say what new things there are to offer the gaming market. Everyone wants to look at art and that's it. As sad as that is.

Thanks for the detailed response and opinion.

#1 I don't feel it's necessary. I would find a female protagonist with a normal partner enjoyable to play if it had a good story and dialog. For the male NPCs, if not appearance are you talking mainly about non-con? I agree there definitely seems to be a market for that. Peruse through the Skyrim mods in LoversLab and you'll find a vast array of mods designed for female players who wish to be abused in more ways that I can imagine by both male and female NPCs. That's not something I'm into, so I've been somewhat shocked at the amount of time and effort that authors have put into creating those. But it's clear that the fetish is something that a sizeable chunk of the player community is into. #2 Appearance/age outside the normal range might work, but to be honest sticking to reasonably young, fit, and attractive is the best bet. I think people play these types of games to escape reality. The models don't have to look like Lara Croft or Clark Kent, but it's like with novels where success depends on the main character being likeable. For a VN requiring many hours of attention, the characters need to be both likeable and visually appealing. Realism is important to a degree but there's a reason movies and TV are filled with mostly good looking people. Everything you've posted about this new project has me very intrigued and I like the direction you are taking.

It is common in visual media to stereotype appearance. Truck drivers should look like truck drivers, doctors should look like doctors. And everybody should be good looking except for bad guys. I suspect that helps viewers quickly make sense of the story. Novelists often don't need to mention whether a character is beautiful or ugly. 99% of projects are copycat. It might be that they are following what works, and it might be that something that sorta works but can be delivered quickly is the priority. And that could work with a lot of players who simply want to see nakedness. I do think though, that the best strategy, especially after a certain type of project has dominated for a while, is to try to invent a new something that works. If you do that, your market share will bloom for a while until 99% of everybody else is doing the same. Then time for a new idea again.
