Tertiary System: Mass Combat

The mass combat rules offered thus far for Fifth Edition can be pretty disappointing depending on the expectations of your group. Trying to extend the core mechanics to adroitly navigate an entirely different scale of play is simply too much stretching, often eliminating player agency and diminishing how fun the game is for everybody. Instead we offer you this alternative tertiary system, rules that employ straightforward mechanics based on narrative storytelling. Make the players into epic heroes who can turn the tide of battle in the face of overwhelming odds without any headaches! Designed by Benjamin Eastman, illustrated by Júlio Cesar Oliveira Rocha.

Benjamin agrees! "Great question. I would say you should 'assume the unit has the same movement speed as the individual creatures that make it up.'"

Mike Myler

Would there be additional rules for movement of each unit to be used as part of this or would we just assume the unit has the same movement speed as the individual creatures that make it up?

Alex Meredith

I bet he'll say specialty, but I'll check with Benjamin and let you know :)

Mike Myler

Do you mean damage value or something else? Damage isn't strictly necessary to have inside of the example units (IE the Reaver Horde has the same regular damage value as any other Horde army unit), but I had the author do so to make it easier on GMs in the thick of battle.

Mike Myler

It is not immediately clear why the units have a damage value in addition to their unit dice. is this from a previous iteration of the design or did I miss something in the instructions? more specifically, "The winning unit deals damage equal to its Clash result, while the losing side deals damage equal to half its Clash result. This damage is first reduced by the unit’s armor before other damage reductions are applied." and Clash=unit dice+hero dice, so when do I use the damage dice? other than this but of confusion, I absolutely love this subsystem

Cloud Captain

Nice! Do you have any recommendations about adding firearms or artillery to these rules, or should it just be represented by a sufficient specialty?
