ZEITGEIST #1 (Part 1): Island at the Axis of the World

The first part of the critically acclaimed adventure path is here! In factories throughout the city of Flint, months of ceaseless toil by mages, engineers, and shipbuilders have finally concluded. Now well-wishers from across the nation of Risur have come to witness the launch of the world’s mightiest vessel of war: the R.N.S. Coaltongue, impervious to spell and cannon and armed with fire that could slay even a dragon. On the docks, constables keep a close eye on celebrants and troublemakers; in the shadows, conspiracy and betrayal threaten this technological titan on its maiden voyage.

Meanwhile, on an island in the lush Yerasol Achipelago, enemy spies put their plans into motion, clouded with secrecy...

I love it that you added the maps! Can you do that for the other advanture parts as well?

In the original 4e version, he was a Deva, so I'd go with that. I'm guessing that at some point they intended to change all of the Deva characters in the story into Aasimar, but then decided to keep the original, but forgot to go back and fix it.

Shane Larkin

Another minor update (just some typos, so don't panic about redownloading it). Current version is 1.2.

Elsewhere, Roland Stanfield is described as a Deva, but page 5 describes him as an Aasimar.

Ben Fowler

I have uploaded three hi-res maps.

The file has been updated with some minor amendments. Please redownload it. The file you want is the one which says "v1.1." at the end.

The fire sprites have been partially removed from the saboteurs' plans in a way that winds up making little sense. Sokana is not listed as having a summoning scroll, doing anything to summon the sprites, or indeed doing anything that involves the magazine; the sprites do not have a stat block; and yet, the sprites are still noted as trying to remove the magazine's wards and throwing firedust casks at the PCs. (While I'm at it, the text description of the magazine -- in every version of IatAotW -- doesn't match anything on any deck of the Coaltongue map.)

We've done it this time because it's closer to other "official" 5e adventures, but we've been debating with Ryan Nock about forgoing that practice for ZEITGEIST. If there's a lot of resistance to using modified NPC stat blocks, then we'll definitely change going forward!

Joey

How often are you going to refer to NPC stat blocks? I don't think it's a terrible idea to use them for minor foes, but if a key player gets the "Use NPC stat block", I may just write up my own stat blocks.

Nicholas "Nyke" Yaeger

Because of the scale of this project, we're releasing one act of each adventure in our monthly adventure slot. Each one of these acts is twice the size of our monthly EN5ider adventures!

Joey

...huh, this is only the first chapter of Island? What's the release schedule likely to be?

Evil Midnight Lurker

Speaking of maps, for anyone who needs this and hasn't noticed, you can extract a blank map of Flint from the one in Bonds of Forced Faith. My thanks to whoever did the layout for that!

Seconding the map release request, especially for player-friendly versions of maps that don't yet have them.

Nice! I've been waiting for this! A couple notes: Will there be a high-res map release for this adventure and/or all of the adventures? High-res map images are extremely helpful for those of us using VTTs with our campaigns. I'm finding that the language in Part 3 referring to a "Countdown" clock, makes the section a little confusing at first glance. Countdown clocks count down, but typically you track rounds by counting up (in this case, to 40 rounds). All of the various actions and events in the section add and remove rounds in a manner consistent with tracking rounds counting up, but refer to a "countdown" clock. I've only found 1 typo so far: Page 10, 2nd paragraph of Goal Two. "...but most likely the party will use a combination of skills.slategrey".
