The 2004 edition is based on the former layout (I must admit I prefer that one π )
It was chosen because it has a very different look from the other years and it includes different sand colors and the blue & white track details.
It includes:
2004 billboards
2004 fence boards
2004 grounds / grass
2004 brake markers
Blue & white kerbs & tyrewalls
Colored sands (blue / yellow and red)
VAO Patch
and a lot more π

Last year there was a lot of issues regarding track physics, pits, AI... so a complete update of track melbourne22 was required to correct these
Here are a summary of what has been changed:

Pit section completely recut
Penalty Cut Sections added a T4 , T9, T10, T14
AI & surfaces update
New Pit slots: now has 30
track optimization, cleanup & size reduction
track melbourne22 & melbourne_2019 now included as layouts in a single track folder
missing tyres sections on some tyrewalls

1. INSTALL ORIGINAL TRACK
Track is melbourne (new unified version melbourne_2019 + melbourne22)
and can be found here:

2. DOWNLOAD THE EXTENSION
Download the Melbourne Classics Pack:

3. INSTALL THE EXTENSION
Content Manager cannot install extensions directly
so you have to manually extract the extension to your assetto corsa folder
using Windows Explorer (override extension existing files if asked)

4. SELECT A TRACK LAYOUT IN CONTENT MANAGER

These changes in particular were almost all there for 2005 as well (only the exit curb for T2 was added), - in 2006 the astro turf parts in T1 and T3 were added, - in 2007 all the other astro turf parts were added as well (apart from T14) and the curb color has changed to red/white - in 2008 the astro turf in T14 was added - in 2012 the curb color changed to green/yellow and the sausage curb exit T4 and T9 were added

Right now I haven't made changes to melbourne_2019 physics but I note all of this for future updates (obviously classics pack will get some new layouts, I think it was much better and technical than the current 4 DRS layoutπ)

It would be these needed to be removed/switched out with grass: - astro turf exit T1/inside T2 - curb exit T2 - astro turf exit T3 - sausage curb exit T4 - astro turf exit T5 - astro turf exit T6/inside T7 - sausage curb T9 - astro turf exit T9/inside T10 - astro turf exit T12 - astro turf exit T13 - astro turf exit T14 - astro turf exit T16
