The term "adventure path" was first used in DUNGEON Magazine and then later adopted by Paizo for its Pathfinder Adventure Paths about 8 years ago. It refers to a series of published adventures which form an overall storyline. Adventure paths existed long before the term was coined, of course - for example, the Dragonlance modules for AD&D were an example of an adventure path.
