The Diabolist

We begin our second hundred supplements with another new class - the Diabolist! Diabolists deal with forbidden secrets and dark entities, grasping for power through dark pacts. While they have things in common with necromancers and warlocks, diabolists are something entirely more... diabolical! Also included are two Dark Paths - the Demonic path and the Devilish path. And keep an eye out for next week, when Mike Myler introduces some conjured horrors, such as the accuser devil, contract devil, and more! Illustrated by Phil Stone. This is EN5ider's 6th full class.

I am quite late to the party but I'd say either Acolyte (of a dark cult), Criminal (probably not going to be super law-abiding), Hermit, Noble, Outlander, or Sage. :)

Liking this so far, I have a player who wants to try it out. Since there isn't a Quick Build entry for this class, what would a recommended Background from the PHB be for this class?

I like the class though it's a bit lacking at 1st and 2nd level. I'd at least let his familiar attack, to have something to do with those conjuring points.

The temporary hit points feature changes the core element of temporary hit points (you replace temp hp not add to them). Also the phrasing of a 7th level power that is 100 ft x level or 100 ft x proficiency bonus whichever is larger. When would proficiency bonus be larger than 7? Added text isn't needed. If this is for a villain creation it would have been better to build it as a Monster with different elements for each CR instead of trying to let enemies have class levels. The class doesn't feel 5th edition.

It seems a bit more powerful than other classes, however, I agree with Lukas about the narrowness, and that may be part of the balance.

This class is rather weird when compared to other 5e classes. The main issue is how narrow and specific the flavor of the class is. A diabolist shouldn't really be it's own class. Instead it should be an archetype in some kind of summoner class. The biggest break in 5e design philosophy is the subclass choice at level 6(!) - compared to any other class that picks at level 1, 2 or 3. And the choice doesn't really change that much about the class - as is evident from it being one feature. It only changes the list of available monsters for you to summon. Summoning more stuff is also problematic, as the 5e design team tried their best to limit the possibility of characters adding more participants to combat. A Diabolist adding 4+ creatures - each of them with different stat blocks - to the combat is not going to make combat any smoother or simpler. And for a class all about summoning creatures it's kind weird to only get that feature at level 3 (the familiar doesn't count, as it's not a combatant).

This is the beginning of EN5ider's autumn season, "Dark Magic." Enjoy! Our next article will be "Conjured Horrors," referenced in this piece, which includes new fiends for GMs and Diabolists.
