Comments

The class is cool but whats the point of having spell casting at level 1 if it does nothing? You dont get slots till level 2 and you cant prep spells that you dont have slots for, so what is the point?

Chess

I like the class. That said, I do have a question. What advice do you have for deciding which other spells to add to the alchemist's spell list?

Richard Ferguson

Almost exactly what I had in mind. Also a fan of Erikson's work.

Chris Davies

Liking Malazan Book of the Fallen as I do, I was thinking something along the lines of Moranth munitions when I saw this article. The burst bomb seems about like a Cusser. Maybe Sharpers (shrapnel) and Burners (fire) would just be different damage types of that kind of bomb?

Erik Larson

I didn't want to give the warlock's major advantage to another class.

Chris Davies

I have to agree that as given, it is a bit too weak. Too few spell slots to really be a contributing character. Why the half level caster? At 2nd level he gets two first level spells, which have to be burned to get two bombs a day? If you are going to keep the half caster, what about letting them recharge on a short rest?

Gary Totten Emerson

Regarding questions: the homunculus is the one described in the SRD and the core rules: http://www.5esrd.com/gamemastering/monsters-foes/monsters-alphabetical/monsters-h/homunculus Regarding the emperor bomb spell slot, any spell slot used is treated as a 9th level slot for determining numerical effects. Spontaneous recovery should require an action.

Joey

I have those exact same questions and comments.

Gabe Died

Actually me and my group found this class to be A LOT weak! Starts weak, doesn't get a nice boost at level 5 (Extra Attack / Level 3 Spells etc - since Level 2 spells at level 5 is crappy). Maybe give his bombs a sneak attack like progression (+1d6 every odd level) or maybe just give it 9 spell levels (Or 9 levels "Lock-Like" with 6-9 spells being secrets).

I strongly believe it's the Monster Manual one, since it is tiny and has wings (And will fit the "grow to small and shed wings" description).

Leo 86

Spontaneous Recovery might be missing an action type. Do you use your Action for the feature? Bonus Action? 1 minute? 10 minutes?

Andrew Bahls

On the emperor bomb it states that you can treat it as though it used any level spell slot up to 9th. What level spell slot is actually used? Also Mind Bomb is not bolded as a separate option under the discoveries of destruction options.

Patrick Thomas

This is fantastic. Good use of subclasses. More to come one day? Q re the homunculus: later it says it can grow to size small and looks humanoid, but the initial one has no description at all - only stats. (Are you meant to refer to the one in the MM or is a side box missing?) This is an interesting take on this without all the extra stuff. Alchemy at the core :D

Evil GM

It's a cool concept but it seems kinda weak :( How about giving those two 1st Level Slots at level 1?
