The physical keys lever up when you press the keyboard, pressing the ribbon into the paper - leaving the ink in the shape of a character. We're stuck with QWERTY keyboards still today - because in ancient times you needed to space the popular keys (yunno - like "a", "e" "i" and so on) across the board so the levers wouldn't stick together. Why do we use it today? Same reason our autos and railroad cars have wheels with the same spacing as Roman chariots. We're stuck with it.
