Well, you want more Paul Newman; "The Hustler" with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason and for later the follow up "The Color of Money" 25 years later with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise.

Okay - now some babble. When this movie first came out, and we saw it in the theater, I was most excited about watching JJ, played by Ray Walston. He was a famous song and dance man, but I knew him best as the Martian in the tv show, "My Favorite Martian". The movie, though, is chock-a-block with well known talent of that generation, and I'm sure you'll get to know them more and more as you watch other things. Billie you do know: Eileen Brennan, who was in "Murder By Death" and "Clue", among many other things. Funny that you compare Newman to Dreyfus because, as you know Dreyfus was Hooper to Robert Shaw's Quint in "Jaws", and here we have Shaw as Lonnegan. You can barely recognize him, isn't that right? Robert Shaw was a remarkable actor! I'm pretty sure there's an inside joke with Newman's Gondorf masquerading as a man named Shaw. The first time you watch this movie, it's great and surprising. Rewatching is just a gratifying because now you're one of the team and you're in on all the tricks. Also, as far as the comparison to a play - yes, yes, yes: down to the creating of a set for the play to go on; the casting process; the comeraderie and support. Joplin's music helps to hold this together, and the movie initiated a resurgence of popularity for his music. I love all the chosen rags, but my favorite, as I say below, is the quiet and delicate "Solace". Anyway, now off to listen to your "talk about".
