Just one detail: notice that, even before Faith starts falling apart and going all "I'm evil! I'm EEEVIL!", Angel had it already figured out. He knew what she wanted, i.e., to be punished, even killed. Why? Because that's what we see in the flashbacks, with him "remembering every person he killed", not killing that woman despite being hungry as all hell, going around in Romania asking for help and living on the streets and not taking a bath or looking after himself... he was living the phase of guilt, the transition between "I'm evil and proud of it" to "oh no! I'm EEEVIL!" -- i.e., he had gone through the same path. And that's the function of the flashbacks in this episode -- to stress how similar to Faith Angel was, and how far he came despite of that. It's ultimately a little tiny bit of hope... for Faith.

I liked pretty much everything about this episode... but I'll single one thing out: the flashback moments about Angelus turning into Angel after the gypsy curse... wanting to protect that baby... oh damn, that must feel like the mother of all hang-overs...
You say, "she knows it's a spell, it's not his fault, and she was the one who brought in the gypsy girl... and she's mad at HIM?" Well, nobody has ever said that evil creatures are... rational and moral about attributing guilt...

"Am I feeling bad for Faith?" Really, everyone should have since her very first episode since S3 of Btvs.

What I love is that Faith has been haunted ever since the Buffy ep where she killed a human accidentally. Not having the solid parenting Buffy had and the Giles as watcher.
Faith says it when she starts to work on the heat torture. Eliza’s subtle hints of over the top and then quiet. The makeup of the red circles under the eyes from lack of sleep. In a sense, keeping herself so busy that she doesn’t have to think about what she’s done.
Based on all the ‘cop show’ stuff the first kill is the worst especially if you’re meant to be keeping people safe. The slayers are kind of the demon control police force.
I just love that Angel understands the depth of Faith’s regret. Hence, the backstory :).
