I felt the exact same way Ashleigh did when I first saw this episode. It took me awhile to realize what a ballsy episode this is using storytelling to talk about sexual power and FGM, which happens in the USA as well. It's not executed perfectly but I have come to think it is an amazing episode, especially if it leads others to research FGM. There's even a good website that is USA focused.

This episode wasn't terrible, the analogy was hamfisted, but fine. Also, people forget that the 2g network was basically digital walkie talkies, cell phones sucked until data transfer improved in the late 90's, 2.5/Edge network, and then 3g. Finally, I love how Wes is slumping over to not show what a ripped demon hunter he really is.

Bad episode with one of the best moments in Angel history. I don't dance.

I'll go against the grain and say it's a perfectly fine episode. Not one of the greats or anything, but fine. Yeah, there's an FGM allegory, but it's also a lobotomy allegory, and that kind of makes it overall about the ways we mutilate women to control them. I feel like there's a trend of thinking allegories are in some way bad or minimizing, but what people forget is that this was a show whose demographic at the time was girls 13-19. (It was a WB SHOW. You know, like Roswell and Dawson's Creek?) It was an introduction to very real and scary issues that a lot of us at the time were too young to understand but saw in the news all the time.

Haha got to agree with everyone else Ashleigh. This is definitely the worst episode of Angel, if not the worst episode in the ENTIRE Buffyverse. I can't even muster the courage to watch along with you.
Perhaps I'll save it for binge-drinking watch along haaa.
