14:50 Oh you sweet child. my you live in bliss of not knowing.

I think this episode also establishes Angel as a main character that thinks hard about his ideals. At some point in his life (we'll see what point in Season 2) he decided he was going to help those in need; and here, we see him destroying the ring of Amara because he thinks it might make him blind, or less caring, about those poor people in the night who have nowhere else to go. It feels like he did put some thought into the kind of soul-savior he wants to be. Leave the 9-to-5 work to those who are already doing it; I'm going for the lost souls, for the sad and hurting, for those who are... like me. :-) Maybe Angel sees himself as saving himself a little bit by destroying the ring? By making sure he continues to care for the most abandoned?...

Not Ashleigh spoiling her Buffy reactions with spoilers.

That was what I was (poorly) trying to express in my post, that people were/are comparing Angel 1 to Buffy 4, which isn't really fair. On the other hand, at this point Whedon had 3 years of doing a show to know better what to do, the Angel 1 had a bigger budget than Buffy 1, and the two mains already had established characters, so it would make sense Angel would be stronger with that foundation.

That’s what I love about reaction channels, we get to relive our first watch vicariously through someone else experiencing it for the first time. It's embarrassing how excited I got seeing Ashleigh was watching Angel.

I guess it's just a matter of taste. Angel did have the advantage of the crossover episodes, which helped push it along. Plus, it had a longer season to work with. Both Buffy and Angel had that creature-of-the-week style in their first seasons, but I think I just liked Buffy’s creatures and humor a bit more. That said, I’m probably remembering it through the lens of my first watch—when Buffy Season 4 was airing—so my view was probably a bit skewed by how far Buffy had already come.

Glad you'll be giving Angel a chance, super excited for your reactions to both shows together!

I agree Angel gets much better after season 1, but the same can definitely be said for Buffy. I actually think Angel wins in the "Which one had the better first season".

Kenton Kruger

I don't love Angel as much as Buffy, but there are a LOT of really good episodes of Angel and some that complement the other show or cast a slightly different light on it. Plus I love Cordy.

So glad you liked the show enough to give it a shot—can’t wait to see the rest of your reactions! I’ve said it a few times on here, but Angel really hits its stride in Season 2 and beyond. That said, they did a solid job in Season 1 using the Buffy crossover episodes to keep fans engaged while the show found its footing.
