"Eclipse first, the rest nowhere" In the 1700s, there was a horse named Eclipse who was undefeated out of 18 races, winning his races in a dominating fashion and considered the greatest race horse of his time. During this time, there was a type of race called a heat race where the horses would compete multiple times. Each race was called a heat and the winner would be the horse that wins a set number of heats. In a heat, if a horse was behind the winner by 240yards, that horse would be said to be "nowhere", i.e. disqualified and unable to continue to the next heat. In the second heat of Eclipse's debut race, Eclipse beat every other horse by 240yards. The phrase was coined by O'Kelly (who would later become Eclipse's owner) when he placed a bet that Eclipse would win by more than 240yards in the second heat to which he did and O'Kelly won the bet.
