Gene Hackman Poll

sorry for the radio silence - I have been in bed for about 11 days.
-12/10 would not recommend getting walking pneumonia but I think I am officially back in the land of the living. Our monthly Live hangout will take place NEXT weekend!

The stories around Gene Hackman's death (and his wife and dog) are so sad and scary. Just a reminder to check on your loved ones & older relatives/neighbors!

What should we watch in honor of him? He has TONS of titles so this poll might be a little long!

Comments

"Enemy of the State" is a very good flick, and Gene Hackman was Very Good in it, it's a modern day thiller... Also, "Hoosiers" was very good, He was Very Good in it, and it's based on an actual Small Town High School Basketball Team in Indiana in the early 1950s...

James Falato

The French Connection would be cool to watch.

fanofactionflicks

I was so hoping The Royal Tenenbaums would be on the poll. He is absolutely brilliant in it & was the first movie I thought of to pay tribute to Mr. Hackman. It would also give Ashleigh a chance to dip her toe into the movie world of Wes Anderson.

Vicious Trollop

I was thinking The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

MidNite1869

Oh man, no Runaway Jury? Would personally say Superman II myself of those too.

Vincent Perrone

No Bonnie and Clyde?? Unforgiven is good too though.

EJN

Rest assured I do own the DVD. I just haven't found time to watch it. It's on the list!

Kayla Fehribach

Mississippi Burning would have been a good one to watch. True story with an amazing performance by Gene Hackman.

Dawne ~ Island Green Strong

It may be a basketball movie but Gene Hackman is front and center and shines for the whole movie.

Kimberly Polson

Honestly it should be The French Connection... too many comments to see if it was mentioned, and the Wes Anderson 'the royal tenenbaums' would be channel appropriate 👍🏻

LostintheCode

Why isn't The Quick and the Dead on here?

Deadpools Tell No Tales

Passionate plea for hoosiers instead of unforgiven. Yes Gene killed it in that movie he isn't the lead however. Hoosiers is a Gene Hackman vehicle and is a heartwarming performance while in unforgiven it's a intense one to say the least. Please if you voted already consider changing to Hoosiers.

Kimberly Polson

Another wish for Crimson Tide. Also, Hackman was great in The Firm. I voted Unforgiven, but it's harsh/a hard watch.

Genette Irlbeck

Glad to hear you're feeling better!! Lots more rest and fluids!! Also... Mississippi Burning (1988), The Replacements (2000) and Welcome To Mooseport (2004)

ssb031

Oooh!! That'd be fun!!

ssb031

I love, love, love Hoosiers but your mileage may vary, because it is VERY much a basketball movie. It's got other elements as well that add to the drama, but first and foremost, it's about basketball so if you're not a fan of the sport, it might not work for you. That said, on this poll, I'd probably go with Unforgiven, for which he won an Oscar. If you haven't seen it, you could go with The French Connection in the future. Fun fact about that one: the fast food chain Popeye's is named after Gene's character in that movie, Popeye Doyle (and not the sailor man, as many people assume).

Jeff K

Yep, after reading all the comments, we definitely need more Gene Hackmam on the channel. There are just too many good ones that need watching.

CinWin

I chose Unforgiven but Gene Hackman was in so many bangers. Crimson Tide (Denzel! mwah), No Way Out, French Connection, honestly Gene Hackman is one of movies great 'that guy's.

TaleenaS

I've already said that I wish The Poseidon Adventure was on the list, but I really like Behind Enemy Lines, too.. on this poll, I voted Superman 2, though. It's the best of the Superman movies. I know Unforgiven is probably going to win. It's good, but it's never been a favorite of mine. Plus, everyone already reacts to it and I'm sure Ashley would have gotten to it eventually even without a death.

Wendy Smith

Unforgiven is a great movie, but Gene Hackman is a supporting character in it, so I gave my vote to Hoosiers. I also think Ashleigh would love Crimson Tide. And I agree with everyone else saying that The Quick and The Dead is a lot of fun. Maybe Gene Hackman should be a franchise for a month.

Steve Friedman

I love For a Few Dollars More.

Wendy Smith

Ohhh, you just MUST! It's so good and based on a true story!

CinWin

That one is very underrated IMHO.

Wendy Smith

I agree wholeheartedly! He was in so many classics, it's almost a crime to just pick one.

Wendy Smith

Yesssss!

CinWin

Generally speaking: Westerns are the second worst film genre after anything made from a comic book.

Michael Parker

I went with "Enemy of the State" because... Well... Better You just React to the Film without any of My Reasoning/Accidentally Spoiling...

James Falato

So many movies being suggested. I also enjoyed Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington. Of the choices offered, I voted for Superman II.

Steve Quast

Okay. Keep us posted, I guess.

Jamie

I hope you are feeling better. I voted for Hoosers, but Unforgiven is a good option, too. For other great ones not in this vote would be the French Connection and the Royal Tenenbaums. He had a lot of great movies so its hard to narrow it down.

Sarah L.

If you bothered to read the comment you would know those are all films that make up my list of worst films I've seen.

James Moyner

Listing random films you don't like seems really odd to me

Jamie

Before this gets decided, I'm gonna lobby one more time to designate Gene Hackman as a franchise. The top 4 Hackman films - including The French Connection - would be varied enough and good enough that you might consider a second month!

Curtis Martin

Don’t apologize, just glad to hear your feeling better. It’s not on the list but would also recommend The Conversation as a Gene Hackman movie, it really is one of his best

Thomas

Heartbreakers is one of the worst films I have ever seen. I despise it alongside: American Beauty, About A Boy, A Serious Man, I Lost My Body, Mirai No Mirai, The Weather Man, and Maleficent to name a few.

James Moyner

That kind of stuff is just Animal House clones 2.0 You have a bunch of college age morons, drinking, having sex, being idiots, and it's supposed to be tons of laughs for the teens who will laugh at anything if someone is hurt like on their jackass show. I hate that kind of stuff I want smart comedy not James Franco, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Jonah Hill, Serh Rogen shit. So yes I would rather watch those two films with her over Eurotrip. I don't watch that kind of stuff.

James Moyner

Wow, I’ve never seen a threat unless someone does a reaction to a specific movie before. Perhaps a DM would be a better avenue for a complaint like this.

Scot Jebens

So glad you're better, missed you <3 Please also watch something for Michelle Trachtenberg, preferably Eurotrip (2004)

Darth_Credible_Halk

You could have several weeks' worth of movies where Gene Hackman was fantastic. Even in less than stellar films, he shines. I picked Unforgiven, but all named in this chat are worthy. I wish for your speedy recovery!

Cindy Byrne

Wow, it sure is true that you can't please all people all of the time. Or even some people some of the time. 😆 Criminy, Ashleigh - I hope you're really much, much better, because walking pneumonia sucks ass. I can't believe you made the effort to put up a poll at all! Whatever gets picked will be cool, because Gene Hackman was an incredible actor, and I'm just interested to see what you think. Keep on the mend, friend! 👍

Renee MeowMeow Beans

My favorite Gene Hackman film is s fun little court thriller called Runaway Jury.

Michelle LaMar

mildly surprised there was no French Connection option. Or, to parallel the James Earl Jones - Red October memorial, maybe Crimson Tide

Estersdoll

French Connection. That's the movie that made him a star.

Bill Trumpler

I was thinking the same thing. French Connection should be on the list.

Bill Trumpler

I had walking pneumonia once as a kid and kept fainting in class. They finally did a chest x-ray and I was kept home sick for over a week. Can attest that sickness is absolutely no fun at all. I’m glad you’re on the mend.

Zophiela

I was hoping Runaway Jury would be on the list

Peta D

James, you really think those are better? A high school girl risking her future to look pretty on ice and a kid with a habit of b&e who writes a burn book about her own friends? At least Eurotrip has tits and a catchy song.

Leaf on the Wind

Why college banging trash instead of something good with her like Ice Princess or Harriet the Spy?

James Moyner

It's offensive revisionist history. The FBI were NOT the good guys.

Curtis Martin

I do have to agree that The Quick and the Dead should be on this list. One of the best westerns. However, since Unforgiven is probably going to win though, I have to recommend watching the other movies in the Dollars Trilogy first. I think you only reacted to The Good, Bad, and The Ugly. There's also A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. The reason I bring it up is that I read that Clint Eastwood said his character in Unforgiven is also The Man With No Name from the Dollars Trilogy.

Jeb Manning

The French Connection is the movie that put him on the map, so it should be there, but out of the ones on the list, I had to go with Unforgiven.

JHB

Quick and the Dead is way better than all of these movies. I'm also a bit sad there isn't a Michelle Trachtenberg poll. I'd love to see your reaction to Eurotrip.

Leaf on the Wind

I wouldn't be mad about Hoosiers winning, but of the movies on this list, Unforgiven is by far the best film. I hope it continues to win.

Spocktacular

Superman 2 got my vote, but would have preferred Quick and the Dead.

Frankie

What are you talking about? She’s done tons of classic movies. You don’t like how the polls turn out then that’s the voters, not Ashleigh’s fault. Start your own channel then

Brooke Cerio

If French Connection is shown, maybe it should be on Franchise Friday because there were 2 French Connections.

David Hayes

THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995) Also starring Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s a western about a dueling contest between about 20 people. that’s run by the evil man who owns the town. It’s stylish and amazing! A bonus is that this movie hasn’t been reacted to endlessly. It’d be a good way to react to a fresh movie instead of one that’s been done 1,000 times. Trailer: https://youtu.be/Lo9cGqmHXhg?si=aBOEApfuQMLyP-la

Scot Jebens

Ashleigh you made a mistake not putting The French Connection on the poll. It's what made him famous. Rest and get well your health is first priority.

Mr Marvelous

The Conversation is another banger.

Louise Brooks

French Connection really was the one.

Louise Brooks

I feel so strongly that The French Connection should be on the poll that I'm leaving a second comment about it. And it really is an "older classic movie" - which would be nice to get back to every now and again!

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Gene Hackman made one bad movie and it's on this poll (Heartbreakers)

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Now it's fine. Weird.

Cass&Jason

Hoosiers has lots of votes on my screen - maybe refresh?

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Okie dokie, something weird here. Voted for Hoosiers, but I'm seeing zero votes. Are we redoing this poll or is it just a glitch?

Cass&Jason

Funny, I'm from Indiana, but I've never seen the movie. Hoosiers. Hm

Kayla Fehribach

dude where is Royal Tenenbaums

abz

I've already voiced my extreme disappointment that THE FRENCH CONNECTION isn't on this list, BUT I WILL DO IT AGAIN. The fact that this channel used to be about classic movies but is now hung up on the Marvel franchise is why I went from the $20 dollar membership to the $3 dollar membership.

karl balstad

Mississippi Burning is essential viewing.

Evening Star

Hi Ashleigh, I'm a new pair(e)on and haven't said "hi" yet. But on the subject of Gene Hackman, I would like to second the suggestion of watching "The French Connection". It's THE Gene Hackman role, IMHO.

Brandon Look

The Quick and The Dead

Carl Dietz

Feels like it comes across well in the comments, but just to be sure you know I think everyone is happy with this poll, it's just he has soooo many good movies to choose from it's next to impossible to include them all.

Kenton Kruger

Poseidon Adventure!

Oouga

No French Connection?? He could almost have a month to himself

David Harrison

I would have Poseidon Adventure (one of his better portrayals), Crimson Tide (with Denzel Washington, really good), and BAT 21 (excellent War story with Danny Glover) those are my favorites of his. I do appreciate that you are paying tribute to him and hope that these films can come later. I love your videos always and keep u the good work.

Stephen Koehler

The Conversation would be a great addition to this poll.

Michael Buhl

I would suggest Hoosiers considering we are getting into March Madness. It is a great basketball movie.

Johnny Joyner

I agree. He has been in so many great films.

Richard Sheets

Any chance we could also get Eurotrip in honor of Michelle Trachtenberg?

Dissonant Bard

No Way Out

Bill Bevins

No Way Out and Mississippi Burning are great too.

Bill Bevins

Royal Tenenbaums needs to be on this list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Royal_Tenenbaums

J Ashes

Voted for the Unforgiven but his best movies are The French Connection, No Way Out and Mississippi Burning.

Bill Bevins

No Royal Tennenbaums?! That would be my vote.

Emily M.

Was hoping for Bat*21 (true war story). Gotta go with Hoosiers.

Eric

Oh. Marooned .... Uh, only the MST3K version. Of those listed I picked Enemy of the State. But would say Crimson Tide for a real good one.

Brian Straight

Hoosiers is really good so that one gets my vote. I do hope that Ashleigh can get to Crimson Tide one day, that is one of my favorite movies.

Lynette Cummins

Unforgiven is the best film on the list and he is great in it. Also, Crimson Tide should be on the list. I would still vote for Unforgiven, but CT is something Ashleigh should see at some point.

Graham Martin

Absolute Power or Poseidon Adventure belong on the poll, too!!!

Crystal Wood

Right? Such a good movie.

Cosmic Slice

Not one of his more well-known films, but NIGHT MOVES is a great psychological thriller and is also Melanie Griffith's first movie.

Paul Stelter

Where are my Indiana people?

Tami Studey

Wade, Inwent the other way. Hoosers then unforgiven. Both are great!

Michael K Montgomery

I think Hoosiers is perfectly timed for March Madness. Also, 3 other good movies not mentioned enough are, The Firm. Runaway Jury, and The Replacements (supporting role).

CinWin

Unforgiven, then Hoosiers, then Poseiden Adventure. He's got some great performances.

Wade Jones

I am also hoping for a Wes Anderson dive. I think she would especially like The Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic.

Caroline Cocozza

The position adventure would have been my choice

Nick Velasquez

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favorite Gene Hackman movies, plus Angelica Houston and the rest of the cast is fantastic.

Caroline Cocozza

I would also recommend The Replacements at some point. It stars Keanu Reeves but Hackman plays a great supporting character.

Katie Jackson

I think you mean “Enemy of the State”, though oerhaps his character’s name is Emery. 🤣

Stephen Wise

I would go with that of “The Conversation”.

Stephen Wise

I just watched "The Quick and the Dead and The Replacements after hearing if his passing. Hope you feel better Ashley

Wes Stevens

The French Connection was Hackman's first Oscar (Best Actor) and it won Best Picture. It is a great action/crime/detective movie based on true events. It also has a standout performance by Roy Scheider (the police chief in Jaws), who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It ought to be first on the list.

Elliot Nesterman

Also a good one...Sam Raimi

Blu

I know...that's why I picked it

Blu

I just watched heartbreakers in honor of him last night cause it’s hilarious

Alexis Callagan

I agree with other comments. Gene Hackman never made a bad movie. You could make a series of them. "Unforgiven" was my choice, but "Hoosiers", "The French Connection", "The Conversation" are all great choices. Heck, throw in "Superman" if you haven't seen that, or "The Poseiden Adventure".

Bruce R Wilson

"B&C" all the way...

Chris Carman

Agree, French Connection and Mississippi burning need to top this list. Edit - could also add Crimson Tide (bonus with Denzel Washington).

Charlie

Where is French Connection? I agree with someone who said it should be either French Connection, Mississippi Burning or Superman. Also, I have The Firm as my dark horse

Anais Hilator

So many great movies in this man's legacy. You could have also included The French Connection, The Quick And The Dead, Mississippi Burning, etc, etc. I'm voting for Superman II, but any of these titles could easily get my vote. R.I.P. Gene Hackman. Also, I hope you feel better soon Ashleigh. 🫶

James Sharp

I hope you get back to feeling 100% soon but don't rush it.

evil_incarnate

yes! really was a star studded cast

benjamin freeman

Mississipi Burning should be here with the French Connection.

Marcus

i second that!

benjamin freeman

Voted Superman 2 because its the best one ever made but Night Moves is WILD and further proof that Melanie Griffith’s parents did not care about her well being. Like AT ALL.

Skip

How is The French Connection not on this poll??? He won an Oscar for his role in that movie!!!

Michael Buhl

The weird thing about Marooned though, is that film predicted the Apollo disaster by less than a year, and was still in some theaters when the incident occurred. Terrifying bit of precognition, there.

Chelsea

Thing about Unforgiven, yes Gene Hackman is in it, and he's fantastic, but his role in the movie is a supporting role, not the lead..(Same with Superman 2)

Anthony

Pnumonia is no joke, glad you are on the mend

Skip

I guess Hoosiers is getting my vote since The French Connection and Bonnie & Clyde didn't make the cut.

Cosmic Slice

Write in vote for the Quick and the Dead

Tony Rossell

And Russell Crowe, too.

Wendy Smith

I would have preferred a deep cut like “the conversation”. I voted for Unforgiven because he got an Oscar for it and is an amazing movie on its own. Can’t believe she hasn’t seen it already.

Richard Sheets

I recommend swapping out Marooned with The Poseidon Adventure. Considering my first memories of Marooned are from Mystery Science Theater 3000, Poseidon is the more fun Hackman disaster film (and you won’t absolutely loathe his character by the end). Plus since you’ve watched Apollo 13, you’ve basically seen Marooned already.

Chelsea

Glad to hear you're back on your feet! Hope you are back to 100% soon.

Neil Silverman

Hoosiers would be perfect for March Madness College basketball too!

Adam Doyle

I really wish the Poseidon Adventure was on this list. Considering its age, the practical effects still hold very, very well. Plus Gene got to flex his action hero muscles in it.

Wendy Smith

Reading the comments reminded me of how many good movies he is in. I hope some of these pop up in later polls.

Kenn E Wayne

Unforgiven is a western

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Hoosiers is the obvious choice. But I kinda wish Royal Tenenbaums was on there too. Or save it for a franchise of Wes Anderson movies--Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic, Darjeeling Limited, etc.. (and Harriet the Spy for Michelle Trachtenberg! That was a classic for kids growing up in the 90s. And it was the first Nickelodeon original movie.)

Joe Blankenship

As you said, so many choices.... I would also add - if not now, at some point - 'The Conversation' (1974) And hopefully you continue to be feeling better as the days progress.

Carl Sage

Hoosiers is one of my dad's favorite movies, so I've gotta view for that

JC

I vote we make Gene a franchise! Even 4 films wouldn't scratch the surface! Where's The French Connection? Or Unforgiven? Seriously, Gene Hackman Fridays should be a thing.

Curtis Martin

the quick and the dead! great western with Sharon Stone. Leo DiCaprio and Gene Hackman! great underrated movie

benjamin freeman

‘The Poseidon Adventure’ (1972), ‘Get Shorty’ (1995) and ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ (2001) are among my favorite Gene Hackman films.

Hombredave

The Posiden Adventure!!

Michael Parker

Some fun ones here, but missing Heist. I'm not biased or anything!

Charlie Heist

Doesn't get any better than Hoosiers for movie where he is the lead role, added bonus of Dennis Hopper *chef kiss* and in time for March Madness.

Kimberly Polson

I'm so glad you're feeling better, Ashleigh. (((gentle hugs)))

AuntVes

I need a western

Blu

No French Connection? No Crimson Tide? Other than Unforgiven this poll is meh Not even The Conversation

The Goateed Geek

Unforgiven or Superman 2 are my picks. Some worthy mentions of his would also be The Royal Tenenbaums, Bonnie and Clyde, and the firm

Jordan Wyant

Michelle trachtenberg died recently too. She plays a big character in later seasons of Buffy. Will there be a poll for her too?

Jonathan Wiking

I’m surprised the French Connection isn’t on here since he won an Oscar for it, but he did win another for Unforgiven so that is my vote! 🤞🏻

Whitney Mercer

His two best films - The French Connection and The Conversation - are missing from this poll. But since I had to pick from the poll, I voted for Unforgiven, as it was one of his two Oscar-winning performances (French Connection is the other). For the love of all that's holy, don't watch Heartbreakers as your Gene Hackman in memoriam film.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

So glad you’re feeling better! I just got over that a couple of weeks ago, still have the cough though, sucks how long the cough can linger. Hopefully you’re fully recovered. 😊

Vicki

That’s a two-fer. Must do the sequel Be Cool!!

Kenn E Wayne

the quick and the dead! great western with Sharon Stone. Leo DiCaprio and Gene Hackman! great underrated movie also the replacements great sports comedy with Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman

benjamin freeman

If you do a poll for Michelle Trachtenberg, please put EuroTrip on it. As for the Gene Hackman poll, lots of good choices, but Unforgiven is fantastic.

Garrie Morris

So many great films, but I voted for Enemy of the State. One of my all time favorites. (THE QUICK AND THE DEAD is great too...as is FRENCH CONNECTION, and HEIST, and HEART BREAKERS, and ROYAL TENNENBAUMS, and...)

Insane Ian

You should definitely watch Heartbreakers at some point bc you would love it!

Karrie Orr

PLEASE WATCH HEARTBREAKERS! It has Sigourney Weaver too!

Maddie

I really hope Crimson Tide gets some attention sometime in the near future. A great Gene Hackman acting clinic and overall just solid.

Matthew King

You should watch The French Connection or Mississippi Burning. Please don’t watch heartbreakers for Gene Hackman.

Shawn Okeefe

Please react to enemy of the state

Taneesha

I hope you can see The Royal Tenenbaums one day. That's one of the more quirky but fun movies Gene Hackman did.

Geneva Conway

Unforgiven is INCREDIBLE, if you don't watch it now you absolutely will have to at some point

calendar

I would love to see Heist (2001 movie) pop up on a reaction channel at some point. Fun movie with crazy dialogue...and a heist...and Gene Hackman. Good combination.

Cory H

I voted for Heartbreakers but I would have loved to see Get Shorty (1995) and Crimson Tide (1995) on this list.

D Anthony

Sending some positive healing energy your way

Alijammy

Crimson Tide was great too

Brian Booher

Feel better! Class Action was another good Gene Hackman film. It is so sad.

Brandie Woodward

You forgot The Firm.... yes it's got Tom Cruise in it, but Hackman is good in this too!!!!

Julie Lazenby

HEARTBREAKERS!!!!!!
