WATCH ALONG: John Wick

WATCH ALONG: John Wick

Comments

Sorry for the mistake, I never watched the John Wick movies before, and I could not get a good look at the face of the coins. I do feel like my overall point about coins that contain the actual worth in themselves rather than in a government is good for shady dealings.

“Making a dinner reservation for 12” was code for calling in the cleaners to clean up 12 bodies. Then when John asked that guard outside the nightclub if he lost weight and he said “about 60 pounds”, that meant there were about 60 security guys in the place watching out for him.

Don't run from John Wick. You'll just die tired.

The coins are very specifically not Kuggerands. They do appear to be 1 oz though. If I understand correctly in this underworld the coins don't really have an assigned value they are instead dealing in favors and commerce. That is why we see the coins used for cleaning up the bodies, staying at the Continental for an indeterminate length of time, for entrance to the club, or for watching Ms Perkins.

Did anybody else notice that John's hotel room at the Continental has a gun safe? At 44:22

John doesn't really know everybody. Just everybody that he does/did business with. It would be a very closed community.

The gold coins are South African Kuggerands. First minted in 1967, they were meant to boost Africa's gold market. Each coin contains one Troy ounce of gold, which means that it's value is determined more by its contents than by the government that minted the coin. A melted coin is worth just as much as an intact one. This makes them perfect for funding illegal activities, since the gold itself can't be traced to one person.

Not John Wick specific, but... you always comment on 'space' movie reactions (Apollo 13, The Martian) that you wish that you could see such things as rocket launches, etc, in real life. Please consider travelling down to South Padre Island, TX on one of your vacations timed to watch a Starship launch. Apollo 13 showed how incredible watching a Saturn 5 rocket launch was. The SpaceX Starship is even bigger and more powerful. From the beach at the south end of South Padre Island you can be about as close to the launch pad as the people in the bleachers in Apollo 13!
