Mrs. Mothershead is the great actress Wendy Hiller, who was on stage and screen from the 1930s: she was the original movie Eliza Doolittle in "Pygmalion", which became the musical "My Fair Lady", and in her older age (as she is here), she was a force in the small role of Thomas More's wife in "Man For All Seasons". And Gomm is the even more legendary John Gielgud, who was a classically trained Shakespeare expert, and who let us see him in a few movies. He became popular as the butler in "Arthur", where he snapped out some great lines in his usual legendary way!

I saw the original Broadway production, which did, yes, make me cry. The movie is marvelous. Brooks' involvement was on production end, and I think he kept his name out of it because he felt that audiences seeing his name would excite the wrong expectations out of this exceptionally touching and grim history. That's John Hurt as Merrick, whom you might know as Kane from "Alien" and from the Harry Potter movies, but he was a brilliant, versatile, amazing actor, and I hope you get to know his work even better.

The was a tremendous Movie. It was where ei first saw Anthony Hopkins and could really appreciate his acting. But you really have to be impressed with John Hurt and his portraial of John Merrick. The Makeup appliances took almost 8 hours (!) to apply and two hours to remove. He could only work alternatie days since The application schedule was so grueling. This was only a couple of years after Alien, so he was used to some work like this, but it was hard on him. Although nominated for numerous Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for John Hurt, Art Direction, Costume design, Director, Editing, Best Score and writing It didn't win a single one. The industry was appalled when it wasn't honored for its Makeup effects and this led to the creation of a special award for Best Makeup which was introduced the following year with An American Werewolf in London winning the first one. I really have to appreciate the fact the Mel Brooks participated in this. Anne Bancroft who was Mel's wife until her passing several years ago, was excellent in this as well. A cavalcade of British actors in Sir John Gielgud. Even Kenny Baker, who appeared as one of the dwarves in the freakshow, the one who gets John out of the cell he was in and was among the circus performers who helped him back to England. This movie always makes me cry and its a crime it isn't on any streaming service. The DVD market for it also not very well supplied as well although I can get European copies incompatable with my DVD player from Amazon. Its just really sad. I thank you for making it available. IF you want another David Lynch film, his version of Dune is a good one alothough it is a pretty long one. The problems with its production almost led to Lynch removing himself as the director of the film and there are versions of the film, especially the longer TV version with footage reinserted from an older cut which Lynch did not participate in the editing. But Lynch's version of Dune is epic. It also started a collaboration with Kyle McLaughlin with his acting provied on several future Lynch projects such as Twin Peaks. Lynch is a little too surrealistic for my tastes, but I do appreciate it sometimes. Thanks again for this reaction.

I have a recommendation for St. Patrick's Day. Watch a very upbeat The Commitments.

You're right on Anne being Mel's wife and it's Silence of the Lambs.
