This is a great movie, one that I can watch every week or two. Go back and watch Dr. Strangelove then watch Red October and see a very young JEJ and a senior JEJ.
Now that you've done the navy, you need to do the army and react to Kelly's Heroes with Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland. It's a great flick and I think you'd like it.

Movies like this with zero female characters are such a struggle for me to get through, thank you Ashleigh for periodically saying what's going on out loud, it was the only thing keeping my attention from drifting to something else completely lol

The redhead guy with the beard you said you thought you recognized played the principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

There are 16 books in this series about Jack Ryan, they average a good 600 pages each so the films based on them miss a lot out.
I think Red October was one of the shorter ones.
The plot for this (and Red Storm Rising) came out of Clancy playing tabletop wargames using the rules Harpoon, written by another author Larry Bond.
The game is so good it is still used in Naval Academy's for training

Ashleigh, not sure if you ever go to TwitchCon but if you do, there is a maritime museum in San Diego where you can tour a sub.

This was a fun watch along.
Great explanations below. It's a nice stressful movie.
It's good to see Ashleigh think Sean still has it. ❤️🔥

Also, Rameus is never intending to launch his missiles at the United States, his plan is always to defect to the United States, stealing the Red October and giving it to the Americans. The Russians tell the Americans he's planning on shooting the missiles to get American help to destroy the Red October, so he can't give them the sub.

James Earl Jones detonates the torpedo to make it seem as though they sunk the Red October, which is why he tells the sonar technician that he (the sonar guy) heard it hit the submarine, and he (james Earl Jones) was never there. They're basically manufacturing a reason why the Russians can't get the submarine back, thus allowing them to steal it and study the technology involved.

The ping he responds with is the active sonar system. Submarines employ two different kinds of sonar, passive, which is basically just listening, and active, which bounces out a sound wave to use the reflections against objects. Active gives more information, but because you send out a wave of sound, it identifies you to everyone else.

FYI, submarines can go straight up or down by flooding or emptying ballast tanks with water. They usually don’t use that alone, because maintaining forward movement with engines gives them more control and stability, and they can dive or surface much faster than by just using ballast… like you see in the movie. You also asked if it was possible to see a real submarine in person. Yes it is. There are several submarines operated as museums along the US coastline. Most are older than the boats in this movie, and only one is nuclear, but they are basically designed the same way. I’ve visited all of them on the East and Gulf coasts, and can make recommendations if you’re interested.
