EARLY ACCESS: The Hunt for Red October

Thank you for your patience on today's update.

Me, hubben, and the pets are safe but we left yesterday to head to Knoxville to help some good friends out that have been affected by the flooding happening in TN.

I hope everyone is staying safe and taking care of themselves while Hurricane Helene roars through.

EARLY ACCESS: The Hunt for Red October

Should have gone with Conan if you wanted more James Earl Jones.

You oughta check out "Last Action Hero" for another John McTiernan movie. He did this, Predator and Die Hard 1 and 3. "Last Action Hero" has Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's really funny and super meta. Meta before meta become a hip thing in Hollywood.

"What do we do with Sean Connery?" Well, you put him in Alcatraz, but then he escapes, so you capture him again and put him in a Supermax for years. Then a bunch of dudes take over Alcatraz and threaten to kill everyone in San Francisco so you get him out of the Supermax give him a haircut and send him and an excessively twitchy Nic Cage to save San Francisco.

Jon Williams

To be fair, 1980s Cold War geopolitics is probably simpler than Garp. 😂 “Garp bit Bonkie!”

I'm surprised no one has recognized the former Senator from Tennessee, Fred Thompson. "Russians don't take a dump without a plan, son."

N1nth Sh4dow

Or "Das Boot", which will really give you the willies.

N1nth Sh4dow

The book was published in 1984 (the term "crazy Ivan" was considered classified...), the movie was in 1990, the U.S.S.R. was dissolved in 1991. In 1976, Viktor Belenko defected by flying his MiG-25 to Japan and received political asylum in the USA. That was the reference of the Admiral's comment, "This is no stray MiG." At the time this movie premiered, that would all have been well-known to people. These days, I wonder if anyone remembers the USSR? (Other than the Beatles song, that is. Thought that must be confusing to modern listeners...) So the film-makers pretty much expected you to know what the world situation was in 1984. So it's a movie that will steadily age out. Given the complexity of the plot, I believe this is one of those movies that MUST be watched a few times before the viewer can really grasp what is going on. (It took me 7 times to even _start_ to figure out the Robin Williams' movie "The World According to Garp".)

N1nth Sh4dow

Yep - very sad.

MrBamaRed

going by a youtube comment ashleigh made, alot of the problem is that she didn't know what the word defect meant, she thought it meant disobeying an order. so yeah might be a generation thing.

Elisa H.

I don't know why, but every reactor seems to entirely miss that point of the movie. I have to wonder if it's a generational thing, because knowledge of defection was definienty a thing when I was growing up in the 80s. I wouldn't say it was common, but it was a thing that you knew happened... The reason the US sub Captain changes his attitude once they're aboard the sub is that he sees that Jack was correct. At that point, he's doing his job by helping the Russians defect, because it means the US gets a huge amount of intel, both from the senior officers and also from having the Red October. It's the same reason the Admiral detonates the torpedo - he always trusted Jack was correct. (The character Jack Ryan is the main character in an entire series of books by Tom Clancy; he ends up as US President)

Chris Crowther

classification goes from Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret, with sup categories for each also it was from the beginning that Saun Connery's character was going to defect

Jason Skeans

The pilot of that tiny submarine served with my father on the USS Queen Fish. Submarine sailors are awesome.

Jill Peterson

underrated. kept me so stressed

Elisa H.

Just wanted to make sure you understand sean Connery and his group entire plan was always to defect (seak asylum in the USA in essence) to the United States and give the US the red October as a "gift". The theory that he was coming because he wanted to attack the US was wrong and a Russian cover story, Ryan was right in that he actually wanted to defect

Elisa H.

"Convoy" was going to be my suggestion for him (with bonus Ernest Borgnine).

Chris Crowther

Something tells me Ashley would not enjoy "Das Boot", just for the length. Although ironicly she might be OK with watching it as "the original uncut" six part series, which actually bring it in at about 5 hours (ignoring the recaps). You can only get that via the boxed bluray release though, afaicr.

Chris Crowther

Closest Sub Museum to you with an actual submarine is the USS Razorback in Little Rock, AR There are several WW II subs in the US which are accessible to the public. The most modern one is the Nautalus in Groton, CT which was the first nuclear Submarine. Those can give you an idea of the kind of close quarters they live in. You get REALLY close on a submarine.

Stephen Koehler

He also has Stanley's brother in Die Hard as the gift for McClain's kids. It was the same prop used in this movie.

Stephen Koehler

I was thinking the same thing. I've been hearing horror stories all over the area. Stay safe and don't drive through flood waters. The water can easily undermine the road surface and then you go into the sinkhole created.

Stephen Koehler

the actor that you had seen before was Sam Neil who you watched in Jurassic Park.

Oliver- Smilliereacts

He's also a pedophile. A sad and ugly situation.

TheSingulatarian

Sad to see another Icon pass. Movies for Kristofferson. Semi Tough A Star is Born (1976) Pat Garret and Billy the Kid Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore Convoy

TheSingulatarian

Another great submarine movie is U-571 (2000) with Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton and Harvey Keitel.

Wally

love the reaction. but on another sad note Kris Kristofferson who you have seen as Whistler from Blade had died today at the age of 88

Ricky P Kraus

This is one of those movies that I can quote embarrassingly large portions of at any given moment.

Alaina Stone

Great reaction! (And glad you all are safe!) I was a teenager when this movie first came out, and lived near a submarine base. Opening night, 30%-40% of the audience were navy personnel in their dress uniforms. Quite the impression. For a very different submarine movie, I would recommend "down periscope", lots of slapstick comedy.

Aaron D

You can go to Mobile Alabama and see the USS Drum and old WW2 submarine and the USS Alabama battleship. Great side trip if you guys head down to the beach sometime. Crimson Tide is another great movie to check out. And yes, you know the guy in the beginning, the one who identifies the catepillar drive. He was the dean/principal in Ferris Bueller and is the husband in Beetlegeuse with your favorite actress Catherine O'Hare.

MrBamaRed

Speaking of Sean Connery, I definitely think the next movie you should watch with him is...The Rock, if you like the Die Hard movies or Air Force One, pretty good chance you'll like The Rock. Nicolas Cage is in it as well.

Tony Seyffer

Sean Connery's character and his small group of friends (guy who wanted to live in Montana, etc.) were defecting to the U.S. They could not tell the rest of the crew, so they had to come up with a plan to get the crew off the sub before they could go through with it. They told them a phony story so they would believe what they believe when they see the explosion etc. Alec Baldwin's character guessed (rightly) that this was not an attack, and figured it out.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I have always enjoyed this movie. At minute 27 in the watch along you get to hear Ashleigh crush on Sean Connery. ❤️‍🔥 I would like to suggest Crimson Tide. That is another great submarine movie with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackan. But after HalloBeans of course. 😊

Lynette Cummins

To answer your question about visiting a submarine, next time you go to NYC you can go to the Intrepid on the west side highway, its a decommissioned aircraft carrier but also has a submarine to explore (and a space shuttle)

Skip

fun fact. same director as die hard and Predator

Estersdoll

The Order of Lenin was a decoration of merit awarded by the Soviet Union for service to the state. It was named for Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the October Revolution. And no, the political officer whom Ramius kills at the beginning was not meant to be Vladimir Putin; it's just a coincidence that they share the same surname.

Tim Heron

Oof Im glad you guys and the kids are safe but horrible whats happening in TN and NC. Glad you guys are lending hands.

Skip

Sean Connery is a defector to the west. He delivered a super secret silent caterpillar drive to the United States.

TheSingulatarian

"The Order of Lennin" is a medal.

TheSingulatarian

"Can I see a submarine" If you come visit us in Connecticut you can visit The Nautilus the world's first nuclear submarine.

TheSingulatarian

Great Submarine Movies Das Boot Crimson Tide K19: The Widow Maker Run Silent, Run Deep The Enemy Below Destination Tokyo

TheSingulatarian

Since Dame Maggie Smith died, she did several movies which could go in the fun and friendly Wednesdays of Hallobeans. She did enough that it could be its own poll for Wednesdays as a tribute. They are Murder by Death, Death on the Nile (original version), Evil Under the Sun, and Keeping Mum

Meredith Shivers

Sam Neil from Jurassic Park.

TheSingulatarian

Some clarification and SPOILERS for the movie: Sean Connery and his small groups plan was to hand over the sub and defect aka join the USA. The soviets told the USA he planned to bomb them so they'd Sink him, but Alec Baldwin had guessed his correct intentions, that's why they are friendly in the movie

Choof

Caterpillar hole = Caterpillar drive.

TheSingulatarian

Glad to hear that you are safe!

Neil Silverman

Gotta love that Openheimer guy. Lmao

Jacob Colson

Glad you are safe, I’m sorry your friends are having to deal with this.

Asheenah

Great movie but it is blink, and you'll miss him for JEJ.

TheSingulatarian

Stay safe!

Neil K

Yay! Going to watch it now. Now you have to watch Patriot Games next to continue the Jack Ryan movies.
