Hallobeans Poll!

Our first night vision poll of the 2024 year!

I'm going to try and group these movies in the polls better.

(I see where some complain that more recent films will always beat out old movies)so This one is all movies from the 80's! The next one might be older or newer, and I might throw in a mixed bag from time to time.

REMEMBER I WANNA BE SCAREDDDDD

Comments

The two movies I have been wanting Asheligh to see are They Live and Prince of Darkness (which is really a terrifying movie). Both are among John Carpenter's best!

Stephen Koehler

That's a good question. It makes a lot of statements cleverly disguised as a horror movie. I do think it's one of John Carpenter's best movies. It does have one of the best fight scenes in conema history.

Stephen Koehler

Even more so Ma Dong-seok I would think.

Kenton Kruger

Yes to Train to Busan!!!

Tina Thomure

One of my favorites is an older, creepy black and white movie called “The Bad Seed”.

Tina Thomure

Third on Train to Busan! She’s going to love Gong Woo.

Tina Thomure

Love that movie!

Tina Thomure

Another great John Wayne fight scene is the mud fight/slide scene in McClintock. :)

Echo Moon

I don't think They Live is really horror at all, it's a sci fi action flick

Joseph Ricks

I'm going with They Live, just for the line "I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum" and the best fight scene since John Wayne and Randolph Scott duked it out over Marlene Dietrich.

Karl Balstad

I now have the Ramones song used for the end titles of "Pet Semetary" stuck in my head.

Chris Crowther

For 80s horror movies, "The Fog" (1980) and "Fright Night" (1985) are IMHO better choices than any of the films in this poll, "House" (1987) is a weird horror/comedy blend with great practical effects, and if we stretch the time period just a touch, "Phantasm" (1979) is creepy and bizarre.

W. Randy Hoffman

I’m gonna suggest Paranormal Activity.

Mark Hanley

So many good choices. Can't really go wrong with any of them but I went with Pumpkinhead solely for it having one of my favorite Lance Henriksen performances (which says a lot given his horror role history).

David Hunter

I read "Pet Sematary a few years before the first movie came out. The book scared the 💩² out of me. The movie does not hold a candle to the book. If you know the story, try reading the original. Even King has gone on record as saying it's the one story that scared him so much he almost didn't publish it.

Wally

omg yes to Cabin in the Woods! I also wholeheartedly second the suggestions for: Zombieland, Train to Busan, and a Quiet Place!

Andrea Guay Colpitts

Is "They Live" really considered a horror movie?

StellaG0111

Funny Games the American version.

TheSingulatarian

Then maybe start your own channel and be nicer to Ashleigh

Brooke Cerio

Be sure if you watch They Live black sunglasses and do some devils lettuce before hand Ashleigh Burton

Mr Marvelous

THAT scene will get her. 😂

Gio Vidrio

sadly I don't think any of these movies will give you many scares.

Adam Doyle

“Pet Cemetery” is probably going to win. So, I’m voting for an underdog, “Pumpkinhead”.

Jason Espinoza

Might I suggest Angelheart?

Ian Harrison

“They Live” even though it’s John Carpenter is not really a HallowBeans type of movie. It should be watched at some point, but really doesn’t fit the scary horror or spooky themes.

Jason Espinoza

And some are truely exceptional

Leeland

If you want to do something fun for horror month, have you seen the mini series "Love, death and robots" yet? Every episode is it's own story, some are funny, some are sad but almost all are very good!

Leeland

Not really a scary movie, but i can not recommend " A Monster Calls (2016)" highly enough. It makes me hella sad every time i watch it. Even just looking at the imdb page just now made me tear up a little.

Leeland

Idle Hands is also good, but more of a comedy, so maybe for Wednesday

Leeland

From that list i would second the following movies: The Cabin in the Woods Shadow of the Vampire (2000) The Frighteners

Leeland

“They Live” is not scary, but a fun movie to watch. I saw “Pet Cemetery” when I was very young and swore I would never watch it again. I think “Children of the Corn” isn’t that scary, more creepy.

Chel Van Hel

Hi Ashleigh I'd like to recommend "Creepshow" its from 1982 and has a few short horror stories.

fanofactionflicks

And Idle Hands!

Jacob Colson

How about "The Pit and the Pendulum" starring Vincent Price

Tom Castro

What's that got to do with anything?

Bryan Fritchie

"They Live" isn't a scary movie, but it is a must-see at some point.

Shawn Ravenfire

I'd love to see a Frailty reaction, I think she'd really like it

Clone4

In the wise words of Ashleigh Burton Stevens… “Mama ain’t raise no Bitch!”

Gio Vidrio

Stuff like "Nosferatu" (1922) or "Freaks" still pack a punch.

TheSingulatarian

I put "The Descent" right up there with "Alien" and "The Exorcist". Between the claustrophobia and the monsters, truly terrifying

TheSingulatarian

"Slither" is great. James Gunn also wrote 2004 "Dawn of the Dead".

TheSingulatarian

When "You Me and the Movies" watched "Pet Semetary" I thought Mrs. Movies was going to kill Mr. Movies she was so mad Mr. Movies made her watch it.

TheSingulatarian

1953 House of Wax

Leigh Nathaniel Silver

Ashleigh should watch Michael Jackson's Thriller for a reaction, short but would be entertaining.

John Morgan

My 2¢ of Hallobeans suggestions: - Audition/Odishun (1999) - Blood Simple (1984) -:Brightburn (2019), (a horror version of a superhero movie) - The Cabin in the Woods - Candyman (1992) - Dead Alive / Braindead (1992) - Don't Breathe (2016) - The Descent (2005) - Drag Me to Hell - The Eye (2002) - Frailty (2002) - Fright Night (1985) - From Beyond (1986) - The Howling (1981) - The Hunt (2020) - Martyrs (2008) - The Mist (2007) - Nightbreed (1990) - A Quiet Place - Re-animator (1985) - Ready or Not (2019) - Rec (2007) - Shadow of the Vampire (2000) - Shallow Grave (1994) a dark thriller from the same director of "28 Days Later" and starring a young, baby faced Ewan McGregor. - The Strangers (2008) - Train to Busan - The Witch (2015) ** Wednesday suggestion ** The Frighteners, Teeth (2007) They Live, What We Do in the Shadows, Zombieland

Wally

I want Ashleigh to watch They Live SOOOO bad! That said, there are a bunch of good ones on there with it. I'll just have to cross my fingers.

Snow Goon

If you wanna really be scared and unsettled, I highly recommend "The Strangers" from 2008

The-Nordic-Panda

Watch "Serpent and the Rainbow". Very unsettling.

Monte Sheppard

REC and The Decent are both great.

Kenton Kruger

Good job Ashleigh, I like your thinking because it's true. Now older movies might finally have a chance!

Meredith Shivers

Second Train To Busan.

Kenton Kruger

You have some Stephen King, and a John Carpenter, then you have a King/Carpenter combo….I’m surprised that’s not winning.

Russell Crockett

Fyi! They live isn't really a "scary" movie I think

Elisa H.

The Changling isn't well known, but a real spooky movie. Check it out.

Joe Lease

I feel like it’s gonna be a while before “Christine” gets its turn on the channel, but I still voted for it. “Pet Cemetery” is a good choice, too, though.

Tim Glaim

I recommend Slither a horror movie from the guy that made Guardians of the Galaxy and has Captain Mal playing the lead, for future polls

Clone4

I'm kinda hoping to see The, Exorcist III on an upcoming poll. It's pretty much right on par with the orginal as far as being a very good and very scary movie. (you can skip the 2nd one thouugh, aside from James Earl Jones being in it, it's not that great)

Anthony

Fright Night. Dark Night Of The Scarecrow. Re-Animator. . . 3 more solid options for scares. Can you please poll Train To Busan this Hallobeans ?

PieHard13

Fright Night would have qualified as a good 80s movie

Wally

Fully agree on The Descent.

Kenton Kruger

Yes to Descent

Wally

They Live will lose here because it's not a scary movie. It should be resubmitted for a vote for a Wednesday film.

Wally

Looks like Pet Cemetery is on it's way to a landslide win. The second one is pretty decent too. Hope SAW makes it into the 2000's poll.

mysteryfan3000

I think you'll love Pet Semetary. A newer horror film you should consider for Hallobeans is Hereditary.

Jason Stackhouse

Pet Semetary might not be enjoyable for you, mostly because it is the EXACT OPPOSITE of Homeward Bound. It's a great movie, don't get me wrong, but it's a difficult watch. I would recommend Christine instead. That's just me ^_^

Omar Anzaldua

See ya in November. 🤣

Bryan Fritchie

What would you suggest?

Jason Stackhouse

Keeps you guessing to. That's my kind of movie.

Lynette Cummins

Ohhhh you’re finna freak out with Pet Semetary!!! 😂😂😂

Gio Vidrio

They Live has the longest fist fight scene. It's such a time vampire. Glad that one is not winning.

Lynette Cummins

They live isn't really horror. It's sci Fi, and won't scare you, but it's a great cult film

Kristopher Long

I would stand in line for a bite from Jerry Dandrige 💋

Lynette Cummins

This would be a good time to step out of Marvel Chronology as it is totally not linked and try Werewolf by Night (B&W version of course)

The Goateed Geek

These are all kind of shite options

Estersdoll

None particularly float my boat, but I'm generally rooted back in the Universal Monster daya, so maybe in the next list

The Goateed Geek

Pumpkinhead is an underrated gem from the 1980's and deserving of a watch. The monster is great and the movie is definitely scary. Going to keep mentioning "The Descent" until it becomes a part of Ashleigh's subconscious lol. This is a perfect night vision movie.

Cristina Collins-Armstrong

Most people never heard of ‘The Changeling’. It’s a great ghost story. Please give it a chance.

Barton Donnelly

I remember my mom and sister discussing the book Pet Semetary by Stephen King. It was an extremely disturbing conversation. Ashleigh is going to be terrified if it wins.

Lynette Cummins

They Live is a great movie but falls more into sci-fi than scary. Definitely worth watching. Pet Semetary is scary enough but also disturbing.

Bill Bevins

a good one for Wednesday would be Once Bitten, fun funny and the lead before he was a star

djhyjak

Still rooting for Fright Night (1985) to win.

Wendy Smith

Frailty, yes!

Wendy Smith

That is a good one. Very under rated.

Wendy Smith

The Changelings is one of my favorite ghost stories ever. But, for Ashleigh, I've got to go with Pet Semetary. Funny thing, I'm just back to TN from Bar Harbor, the location of the pet cemetary that inspired Stephen King.

Wendy Smith

I gotta say that They Live is the best film on this list, but not very scary. I agree with others that it should be reserved for Wednesday less scary night. I don't think it should even be on a poll, it should just be watched. ;) It will change your life.

Echo Moon

House of 1000 Corpses!

Cass&Jason

Very tough call between Pet Sematary and They Live but I went with the former. Probably a good idea to create polls by decade.

David Zabel

They Live shouldn't be on a night vision pole I think

Ricky P Kraus

Awwwww. Poor Pumpkinhead

b nope

I classify "They Live" as sci-fi action, but should definitely be watched some day. Pumpkinhead = under-appreciated. Hoping to see [Rec] on a spooky poll

Michael Tocci

They Live is definitely more of a Wednesday movie. With elevation if possible.

ShartheHeretic

Also, don't forget to stick The Birds on one of these Hallobeans polls. Then if you watch North By Northwest outside of November (as it is suspense, not horror) then you could finally watch Mel Brooks' High Anxiety.

Tyler Foster

Pet semetary gave me nightmares as a kid so I had to go with that one. The changing on the other hand, there are scenes I can’t look. Others I can’t even listen, it’s that scary to me.

Alexis Callagan

Pet Semetary. Still scary after all these years. Only horror movie I can't watch by myself.

Veronica Pearson

They Live is my favorite movie on the poll, but it's not a scary night vision film.

Kenton Kruger

None of these are super scary to me; so I voted for my favorite which is They Live. Here are some absolutely terrifying picks though: REC (2007) (Spanish movie but you can find it subtitled), Grave Encounters (2011), The Descent (2006)

Adolfo Acosta

I think this poll is designed as a "1 winner only" poll because you can only pick one. But given how clearly They Live is dominating for second place even though it isn't that scary, perhaps it can score a Wednesday "lighter movie" slot (or get watched at the beginning of November).

Tyler Foster

Would love to see a great jump scare like What Lies Beneath

J Ashes

I was gonna vote for Children of the Corn, but I know Pet Cemetery will scare you more. It still gives me the shivers.

Mikey Hutchinson

I would say They Live is definitely more of a comical "Elevated" type horror movie... wink wink nudge nudge lol

Sean Fleming

Same. Love the movie, but it doesn't meet the criteria.

Lemurian Jones

Pet Sematary would be the scariest of this bunch. I know last year you wanted to finish Hallowbeans with a movie with an unsettling ending. I would suggest Jeepers Creepers.

PlaceForFaith

FUNNY ENOUGH I JUST STARTED REREADING CHRISTINE TODAY, BUT MY VOTE HAS TO GO TO PET SEMETARY. THAT MOVIE SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME WHEN I WAS A KID

jonny miller

My opinion 1984 Children of the Corn sucks. Not scary and so not what Stephen King had for his vision. I feel like he wrote that one off, kinda like Kubrick's Shining, but don't quote me, lol. That being said, you're really making me choose over the other Stephen King offerings on this poll. Christine and Pet Sematary rule. I'll go with Pet Sematary. Both are effectively scary for me, but Pet Sematary takes the prize between them :)

Renee S

Good one for Bill Paxton.

_tragicmike

Also, while it's great these are all '80s movies and '80s movies are of course 40 years old now, when people say "more recent films will always beat older films," I think they mean "before 1970." After 1970 is when you start getting the still comparatively contemporary classics like The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, and Back to the Future versus actual old Hollywood classics like Singin' in the Rain, Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, and It's a Wonderful Life.

Tyler Foster

Still stanning for FRAILTY if you wanna be scared. But THEY LIVE is good for a daytime watch, especially since it doesn't seem like it'll be on a regular poll soon.

Paul Stelter

making a note now!

Ashleigh Burton

Pet Sematary would do the trick. As would Children of The Corn. They Live is not as scary but would be scarier than a Wednesday reaction.

Brian Booher

YESSSSS Pet Sematary!

Andy H.

I voted for They Live because it's an amazing movie, but that's definitely more action than horror, so you could watch it at any time of the year. For a John Carpenter movie that will scare you, definitely go with Prince of Darkness or In the Mouth of Madness over They Live.

Tyler Foster

I hope you get to The Exorcist III. Definitely do not do the second one. It was terrible and a money grab by the studio.

dork knight

They live is a masterpiece and is john carpenter so you assume Halloween. But it more is an any time of the year movie

ingibingi2000

I would love to see Children of the Corn because yes there are scary moments, but once you come upon Isaac you will either laugh or wonder how a twenty year old man who looks nine years old was able to convince the entire population of children in the town to do what they did

James

Agreed

Insane Ian

I find they live to be more comical than scary. Unfortunately I haven’t seen most on this list 😬😬 so I’ll leave the voting for the people who have! But also a 2000’s release that scared me the first time I watched it was exorcism of Emily rose. Would love to see that make a poll at some point! Happy Hallobeans!

Jordan Wyant

Okay, I didn’t vote for it, but I watched the Changling as a kid (10 or 11) and it scarred me for life. George C. Scott has creeped me out ever since lol

Ben and Gininda Samways

The Changeling PLEEEEAAAASSEE

Skip

They Live is my favorite film on the list, but I would not classify it as a horror film.
