WATCH ALONG: Clueless

WATCH ALONG: Clueless

Clueless is one of my favorite movies! If you want more of Alicia Silverstone, Might I suggest for a funny fun comedy "A Blast from the Past"

As someone who loved Grunge music in the 90s, it kills me when she accuses Josh of listening to “complaint rock.”😂🤣😂

Honestly the best adaptation of classic literature, imo. It's based on Jane Austen's Emma. And on that note, I'd love to have Ashleigh watch one of the adaptations of the original, now, maybe the one with Anya Taylor-Joy? A poll about modern adaptations of classic novels would be great--10 things I hate about you is a good one too.

I spent the whole movie waiting for Ashley to recognize Paul Rudd, and she didn't even realize who he was when she first saw his name in the end credits! AAARGH!!

i always thought that the “Betty” reference came from Betty Rubble of The Flintstones, who was considered quite pretty, especially compared to Wilma.

Susan Holly

I was coming here to said that xD but also he didn't use to like people calling him Marky Mark a few years ago

Ok! So, to help you out with some of the references... Like Dingo was saying, Marky Mark is Mark Wahlberg before he became an actor. He was like 22, super buffed and hot as hell. He used to do a lot of his rapping performances shirtless, and he eventually became a Calvin Klein underwear model because of that.. all before becoming a serious actor. :). Dionne is named after Dionne Warwick, who is a singing legend. You might know one of her later songs, "That's what Friends Are For," which she did in collaboration with Elton John, Gladys Knight & Stevie Wonder. If you haven't heard it or seen the music video, you should check it out. Dionne Warwick is also a cousin to Whitney Houston. "Friend of Dorothy" is a nickname as a reference to anyone who is gay. They're called a "Friend of Dorothy" because Judy Garland (who played Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz) is one of those mega legends to the older gays from which the saying originated. So "Friend of Dorothy" was a veiled reference to gay people, especially in a time when gays were heavily persecuted in society. When Cher talks about her mom and says that "she was such a Bette," that's a reference to Bette Davis, who was one of the original "blonde bombshell" actresses of Hollywood during the 1930s-1950s. Everybody was in love with her. There are several other 90s references in the movie, which probably most people today would never understand. But it's still fun for those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s to remember them - like the "Noxzema commercial," the valley girl references, the clothing, the attitudes, when Cher calls Josh "Kato" being a reference to Kato Kaelin of the whole OJ Simpson murder drama, etc. I'm so glad we watched this movie! I haven't seen it in ages, and it made me feel young again hehe.

Fun fact: Marky Mark was Mark Wahlberg's stage name when he was a rapper.
