JAMES EARL JONES POLL (redo)

there was too much confusion on the last poll - my bad friends.

Comments

Conan!!!

John Morgan

Actually, she hasn't. She's some of his best roles but far from all.

Vicious Trollop

I agree with Ian. Great White Hope is amazing.

Louise Brooks

I like The Hunt For Red October more than Conan but, since it's a JEJ tribute, it seems more apropos that Conan wins the poll.

CinWin

Personally, I would suggest the original Lion King. Granted, we've all seen it, but a rewatch as adults at this point of time, I think, would be good 😀

Omar Anzaldua

HES GREAT IN CONAN, FOR SURE. BUT I HAD TO GO WITH RED OCTOBER SINCE ITS A FAVORITE OF MINE!

jonny miller

Back in 2004, I almost got to work Mr. Jones on a film, sadly we didn’t land him and we got Anthony Mackie instead. That said I want it to be Conan.

Travis Taylor

Fire mares can travel a thousand leagues in a day.

Travis Taylor

I fully endorse this post. Even if I hate the soundtrack for Ladyhawke.

Travis Taylor

Yes, we should honor his starring works, some of which Ashleigh has already seen, so I was just listing some other movies in which he has a leading role, not just a small part like the ones in the poll. in Hunt for Red October, which is currently winning, he has very few scenes. Ultimately it's all fine -- we're just watching movies here, and whatever gets picked gets picked. HfRO is an enjoyable film on its own, but if someone asked me to pick a movie James Earl Jones is in, that would be pretty far down the list (I'd throw in Matewan and Claudine with my other three long before HfRO).

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

if your doing a tribute to a person shouldnt you honor his starring works, and isnt the idea to get to know him not just what you already know

djhyjak

Just watch the Big Bang Theory episode he’s in 😁

Bryan Foster

Check out the 1970 JEJ movie "The Great White Hope" -a kind of bio-pic about the First African American Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Johnson with name changes.

Ian Harrison

Ashleigh, here are some top 10 suggestions for Hallobeans; 1)Abigail 2) Talk to me 3) Christine 4) SIlver Bullet 5) Halloween 2 (1981) 6) Trick r Treat(2007) 7) Scream 3 and 4 8) Constantine 9)Thanksgiving 10) Bram Stoker's Dracula (Gary Oldman). Please and thank you.

Beth Brown

It would really be nice to watch a movie starring James Earl Jones to honor James Earl Jones. Instead of a Sean Connery movie.

Joe Blankenship

Adding a vote for "A Family Thing".

Theadora

It's *great*! AND Mr Jones *very* deliberately uses his voice *very* differently than we're accustomed to!

Theadora

SCREAM 3 is my choice.

Scott Margeson

I'll again suggest his great performance in the NY Shakespeare Festival production of King Lear. It's available on youtube, so folks can watch along if they like. https://youtu.be/EXDz6QSTrKM?si=IAqFAuQJBJlaB4if

Elliot Nesterman

He is in Hunt for Red October for like 10 minutes. He is literally the bad guy in Conan... if it's a tribute to James Earl Jones, it hast to be Conan imho

Mike Gibson

Conan, all the way!

Russell Crockett

Hunt is very cinematic. Conan is fun as fuck

Blu

Voted for Red October because I don't even remember him from Conan, where as h JEJ OWNS the role of Greer and is the only one I can picture reading the books anymore

TaleenaS

Coming in from left field with "The UFO Incident" which stars JEJ and eatures him prominently. And Ashliegh loves aliens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRkOvfXGFrY

TheSingulatarian

I wouldn't mind if you did a Star Wars rewatch since that one predates the Patreon.

Joe Blankenship

I was hoping for "The Great White Hope" but now I'm pulling for Conan.

evil_incarnate

I am voting Conan the Barbarian because I'm standing on my soap box for 80s fantasy films which are severely under represented on the channel. Yeah there is Labrynth and Willow and Flash Gordon and Neverending Story. But my goodness the Conan franchise, Beastmaster, Krull, Time Bandits, Dragonslayer, Excalibur, Brazil(more Terry Gilliam), Yellowbeard, The Navigators, LadyHawke etc. So many classic 80s fantasy neglected, so I'm stumping for Conan the Barbarian. JEJ was spellbinding as the villain. And his hair was epic!!

Anais Hilator

She’s already seen his best roles.

Mikey Russo

Yup, let's just give a 94 year old legend a shout out. That seems like a respectful way to honor him. Oh wait. It's not.

Vicious Trollop

Yes! This would be an excellent time to finally rewatch the original Star Wars trilogy. She's been saying she wants to for a while. That would be a fitting tribute. Much better than the options that are listed.

Vicious Trollop

Since he has small roles in most of these I’m gonna have to go with Scream 3 even though it won’t win. 🤷🏻‍♂️

EJN

I would say Field of Dreams or The Sandlot would be better movies with him in them, but I believe you have already done those...

Algor Langeaux

Have to say both The Hunt for Red October and Conan the Barbadian have both James Earl Jones and another big movie star. With JEJ co-starring with Sean Connery in the Hunt for Red October, and with a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian. Can't go wrong with either of these two movies. And, Ashleigh I know from watching your reaction to The Fugitive that you like both action movies and mystery movies.

William Stefens

I'd suggest just watching the original Lion King as a fun shared experience

Omar Anzaldua

Conan and Red October are both must-sees!

Shawn Ravenfire

To date, the Jack Ryan movies begin with a trilogy: The Hunt For Red October (1990), Patriot Games (1992), and Clear and Present Danger (1994) (which feature James Earl Jones in a recurring role for continuity, after Alec Baldwin was replaced by Harrison Ford. In 2002, there was the first reboot, with Ben Affleck playing Jack Ryan, The Sum of All Fears, which IMO is a very good return to form in line with Hunt For Red October. If I'm not mistaken, Morgan Freeman is playing the JEJ role in that movie. Then the series was rebooted again in 2014 with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, starring Chris Pine as Ryan. Most recently, the series rebooted again on television as "Jack Ryan" with John Krasinski playing the role.

Tyler Foster

There's a movie called "A Family Thing" that stars James Earl Jones and Robert Duvall. I've never seen it, but its James Earl Jones and Robert Duvall, two powerhouses, its probably pretty good. Its a 7/10 on IMDb.

Joe Blankenship

Unfortunately, Jones plays supporting roles in these. Most of his leading roles were on stage. However, he reprised his Tony-winning performance as "Jack Jefferson" in the film version of "The Great White Hope." He was also nominated for an Oscar for the film performance. Based on the true story of Jack Johnson, the first African-American World Heavyweight boxing champion, it tells the story of the controversy surrounding a black man winning the World Heavyweight title. The "Great White Hope" of the title refers to the white boxer who said he was going to reclaim the "honor" of the white race by defeating Johnson in the ring.

Elliot Nesterman

The hunt for red October is excellent, but come on Conan

Michael Lynch

No Traveling allstars and moter kings shame No Great White Hope Shame.

Leigh Nathaniel Silver

I voted conan, I love the movie

ingibingi2000

Nice. 😎

Lynette Cummins

"But that's not really the kind of movie we watch here." <-- sometimes we do, when Ashleigh does an "older, classic movie." But I agree that while having a film historian would satisfy some of us, it's not in keeping with what most people here seem to want to watch.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Hunt for Red October, shorter time on screen, but he stole the show when he was on. Quality over quantity.

Brian's Dog

If you are serious about doing a James Earl Jones tribute then the only movie from this list that he is actually in for more than 5-10 minutes is Conan the Barbarian. He is in 2 scenes in The Hunt For Red October. If Red October wins, don't call it a JEJ tribute. He was an incredible actor with so many great roles & it seems kind of disrespectful to honor him with a movie he's barely in.

Vicious Trollop

This is a time when it would be helpful to have A staff film historian 😂 I know that kinda goes against the spirit of the channel. This would be the time to watch "The Great White Hope" for which Mr. Jones was nominated for an Oscar. But that's not really the kind of movie we watch here. In any event, your intro to whatever wins should include links to his other channel apppearences.

Curtis Martin

I say we rewatch the sandlot or one of the star wars movies

Madame Kitty

That's right! I forgot about Baldwin. She likes Connery, though. It has been a loooong time since I saw any Jack Ryan movies.

Brian Peace

I appreciate everyone informing me that HFRO is in the Tom Clancy series, (I had NO recollection of that) I always thought Patriot Games was the first and lead to Clear and Present Danger. But this is good to know. Maybe when she gets to it she’ll have a better appreciation for it, that is if she does find it boring, but here’s to hoping she doesn’t and actually enjoys the choice made.

Gio Vidrio

Oh for sure they wouldn't get the most votes, but none of the movies listed are really proper tribute viewings for JEJ. I mean, part of the problem is that she's already seen a lot of his popular work, so at least we can be glad about that.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

They're voting for a YouTube edit of Scream 3, which admittedly is probably less appealing to those who watched the full-length. However, the full-lengths are traditionally missing the intro and outro segments where she actually talks about the movie a little more, not to mention, not everyone watches the full length versions.

Tyler Foster

Red October does not have Ford, it has Alec Baldwin. The sequels Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger have Ford.

Tyler Foster

As I said to Jason above, while I think Great White Hope and Claudine are both deserving of a JEJ tribute, as well as the movies you mentioned, I also think they would basically receive zero votes because they are not very well-known. The Great White Hope is also hard to come by in a decent-looking version (there are copies on YouTube, but they look quite bad, and are less than standard definition, aka 360p).

Tyler Foster

I am in total agree with Tyler. Just like the Bond movies, you have to start at the beginning.

Lynette Cummins

While I think Great White Hope and Claudine are both deserving of a JEJ tribute, I also think both would basically receive zero votes because they are not nearly as well-known as Conan or Red October.

Tyler Foster

Well, that is one of the options on the poll, so you can just vote that.

Tyler Foster

Hunt for Red October is a good movie, but JEJ is barely in it. Conan is a far better choice. Watch both, but watch Conan if you’re honoring JEJ.

Wally Hartshorn

Not only do I strongly disagree that The Hunt For Red October is boring (IMO, the best of the Jack Ryan movies by a significant margin), but I'm also in the minority that doesn't like either of the Harrison Ford entries. That said, I think the most diplomatic thing would be what she's done, which is put up Hunt For Red October first, and then later can get to Patriot Games, which is *supposed* to be a direct sequel even though Baldwin doesn't come back and therefore should not be watched first or in competition with October.

Tyler Foster

The Alec Baldwin/Harrison Ford versions of Jack Ryan are more average smart guy in crazy situations, and less Jason Bourne than the more recent versions.

Adam Doyle

I was just coming to suggest skipping HFRO and going right to Patriot Games. Harrison Ford and JEJ.... She'd love it. HFRO is a snoozefest.

Spocktacular

Patriot Games would’ve been a great suggestion too for the channel.

Gio Vidrio

She never uploaded the reaction edit.

Mikey Russo

Conan! Where else can you learn what is best in life??

Phill

People are just using his death to get you to react to movies he’s barely in. Just give him a shout out and do Scream 3, that’s my suggestion.

Mikey Russo

“The Great White Hope” should be on the list. It was his first starring role.

Jason Espinoza

JEJ is actually pretty good in Conan but the hair they gave him for it I just.....can't.....LOL Red October for me

Skip

It's on Patreon(I didn't Know)but it's not on YouTube yet

Katie Jackson

None of these are JEJ vehicles and none really display his talent. I would have loved to have seen Cry The Beloved Country, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings, or The Great White Hope listed -- all three films in which he gives stunning performances (Bingo Long also hilarious) -- and all three "older, classic movies" which would fold back into the channel's motto.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Red October is a great movie but it's not a JEJ movie, he's a minor side character. Conan is the only (and better) choice

Nathan Swapp

I thought she already reacted to Scream 3. I remember watching her watch-along for it.

Jacob Colson

Right it be nice to see an actual movie of his not his minor rolls

djhyjak

i must reSUBmit my same choice for Red October.

Adam Doyle

conan the barbarian is just good old fashion fun. and he's great in it.

erin

Thulsa Doom, for the win.

David Billings

She's seen it.

Michael Parker

GOTTA BE HUNT FOR RED!!

Michael Parker

James Earl Jones is great in Hunt for Red October...for the five minutes he's in it.

Brad Bunch

I voted Hunt for Red October - one of my all time favorites... Conan is a close second on this list...

Michael McSwiney

So some people are voting for no new reaction? I guess if they understand their choice then fine.

Alex Ch

The Hunt for Red October is one of my favorites!

R. Douglas Helvering

I definitely think there should be a tribute for James Earl Jones but I hope we still do Scream 3 for Hallow-Beans

Katie Jackson

The Hunt For Red October is a great movie.

Bill Bevins

A GREAT made for TV movie features JEJ in an epic way, surprised it hasn't gotten more traffic, is The Vernon Johns Story, which is about an Alabama pastor in the time leading up to the civil rights movement. Such a great performance!

Brent Fugett

Definitely Conan. She loves action and Arnie. Of course, Red October has Ford. I just prefer fantasy and JEJ as the personification of pure evil.

Brian Peace

Dr Strangelove was his first featured film role. The tone of panic building in his voice over the intercom as the plane he's on is hurtling toward nuclear Armageddon sets the mood of the entire third act of the film.

John Sheehan

It *needs* to be Coming to America 2... it's his last role and will make you sob.

Cosmic Slice

Conan the Barbarian is my favorite movie. James Earl Jones is so good at being bad

Stevilicious

Only the first two are on her channel.

PlaceForFaith

Yes! Time for some Conan.

Chelsea

She has not uploaded the YouTube edit of Scream 3. She did watch Scream 3 a long time ago but it's been waiting on the back burner for a YouTube edit along with Working Girl and Joe vs. The Volcano.

Tyler Foster

Like I said before: Conan has Arnie.

Cass&Jason

Horse race between Conan and Red October now with the clarity! Hopefully the loser gets a watch in the future!

Matthew Periolat

Coming 2 America is funny and a classic

Brittany Winter

Would love for you to watch “The Stepford Wives” from 1975

Derrick Gardner

Hey Ashleigh, pretty sure you’ve seen Scream 3. Do you mean the fourth?

Alex Ch

The live action lion king left much to be desired so I had to go with Conan on this redo!

Jordan Wyant

The update makes a lot more sense. 🤣

Bryan Fritchie

I hope The Lion King doesn't win. There will be no surprises, that is what makes her reactions so much fun. My vote is for The Hunt for Red October. It has action, explosions, great cast, and will stress Ashleigh out. First time reactions are better.

Lynette Cummins

that one would be a tribute to me, because uhhhhh I died. RIP

Tyler Foster

you forgot option 6: Josie and the Pussycats
