EARLY ACCESS: the abyss

EARLY ACCESS: the abyss

46:50 What if it WAS the wrong wire? But the glowing aliens already had deactivated the bomb? They just wanted to see whether or what the humans were to do about it.

I'd absolutely love to watch you watch the Special Edition now, Ashleigh, although I think you should watch the documentary about the making of the film first--I'd love an excuse to see both again now that you've got the theatrical under your belt.

Mitch M

Same problem here.

Juley

This is one of the few films where you really do need to watch the director's cut, as it changes the context for some things and adds more meaning to the story.

Richard Moss

Hi Ash! I’m in the Hi, yes, hello tier and it says I lack access to the Watch Along. Not sure if that’s just me?

Ed Ondrick

Nah, imo, the theatrical release is better for Ashleigh (and for first-time viewers or careful movie-watchers in general). All the meaning and themes in the Special Edition are present in the theatrical--they're just subtle instead of a hammer that Cameron beats you over the head with. I find the Special Edition preachy and--frankly--a little insulting for how obvious it is, like he thinks his audience is too dumb to catch the subtext of the story. It also completely changes the aliens' characterization (for the worse, imo) to make those points more obvious. I think all of Cameron's films suffer from preachiness in extended versions, tbh. Not only that, but it's almost 3 hours long--do you remember how bored Ashleigh got watching the extended cut of LoTR? She doesn't always have the attention span to enjoy something that long, and just like the extended version of LoTR, the Special Edition drags a lot in some places because they add in stuff that will only matter to die-hard fans, so it kills the thriller-like pacing for very little benefit, because new viewers don't always pick up on why the slower material matters. I don't think Ashleigh would've enjoyed it half as much. And finally, she can still go watch the Special Edition (personally, I'd love to see her watch it and hear her thoughts on how the two compare and which one she prefers and what she thinks about the order), and she may enjoy it more now, knowing where the story is going. But once you've seen the Special Edition, you can't have a fresh take on the theatrical version. You can't unknow what you already know, and the special edition adds SO MUCH that you can never get back any level of subtlety. So while I get why some people prefer the special edition, I don't think it's a case of it being inherently better than the theatrical, especially for viewers like Ashleigh. And now that I've basically written a novel, I'm gonna go, lol.

Not CGI, the chlorine of the yellow water burned his eyes. As far I I've heard in the out of water scenes with the helmet they did it shot by shot, slowly with him having to hold his breath.

I think she might wanna watch this first, the official Making of Documentary before watching a guy's summary video basically retelling a lot of the things the video shows and explains. A bit more relaxing and pleasant to listen to without that guy's narration too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YctOKgWVn9E&t=1s

Well, you've done it again! Watched something I just HAVE to see the full length reaction to because there are so many moments which are MUST SEE reactions to than can fit into an edited video. I could be wrong, but in regards to the "critters", or aliens I got the impression that they couldn't survive outside the water so I understand not seeing them at the end.

YodatheHobbit

YISSS! I'm so ready!

Echo

He was also Hicks in Aliens and Johhny Ringo in Tombstone.

I had so much fun watching this reaction. Ashleigh was cracking me up through the whole thing. "I have the reflexes of a dead squirrel" that's a direct quote folks.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Not sure if she recognized that Kyle Reece from Terminator is Coffee. I had a feeling she would enjoy this one. 😎 Also, Ashleigh's hair looks Fab. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Ed Harris almost drowned making this movie. The crew nicknamed the movie The Abuse. It was not fun at all. Filmed in an uncompleted nuclear reactor.

TheSingulatarian

Crud. Theatrical release.

Matthew Vandiver

Love love love this film!! Def watch the director's cut Little Sis, I think you and Hubben will enjoy it.

Echo Moon

Has she seen the Westworld TV series?

TheSingulatarian

Ashleigh: "I'm a sci-fi girl." Me: Okay, fine. Please watch "The Martian," "Ex Machina," "Minority Report," "Sunshine," "Arrival," and we gots to get you on classic "Star Trek."

So glad you did this. The Abyss is one of my favorite movies. The liquid that they breathe is real. They really did it with the rat and it pooped when getting submerged but they erased it. It's not approved for humans yet. When Ed Harris did it they used CGI. The only real significance in the director's cut is the end which explains the purpose of the creatures in depth.

Bill Bevins

"must have been fun to make" lol you gotta see this https://youtu.be/4k1y6TGW24I?si=wVvCFvgi7XtP7zPV
