Per your question, Bellatrix cast Avada Kedavra on Sirius, which is the killing curse (used unsuccessfully on Harry by Voldemort, and successfully by Wormtail when he killed Cedric). The arch had more explanation in the books but Sirius was dead from the curse. And since they don’t fully explain in the films, Neville’s parents were tortured by Bellatrix via the Cruciatus curse into madness, and were institutionalized; which is why Neville is being raised by his grandmother.
