The pins are RIBBONS. They are the same as the ribbons from which each medal hangs, and some represent achievements in training programs, sharp-shooting, specialties...etc. Each set of stripes on the ribbons represents a different thing. There's one for each of the conflicts we've had, each of the campaigns...etc. The platform the ribbons are on takes up less space on the chest than all of the medals. The bigger the platform, the more the service member experienced. From them, you can read a service member's experience. I only recognize those my dad had, and it gives me a connection to the others wearing the same ribbons, as they experienced the same campaigns, and achievements. They go in a specific order on the platform. PFC means Private First Class.
